CAB BUNK

Hi razor I would really like a cab bunk too [8D]just to store more stuff or the dogs 
[}] Just kampers do a bunk kit or brackets & poles seperatly ? can't remember now was a while a go :I
but I am sure the poles were long enough you cut them to size,(I did measure at the time)definately sell brackets seperatly for cab bunks.

I think it would be easy to make. Mine is just poles with a loop of matterial stitched into a loop.
The tricky bit is the brackets, but Rupert can make you some.

Just an idea.....How about feed a slightly smaller pole inside it so it acts as telescopic pole? I'm presuming the cab bunks were/are used as child bunks right? If this is the case then i would guess that even a thick tent pole would work and take the weight of any child, or even an adult as the weight would be distributed evenly, thus being strong enough? The canvass itself wouldn't be too much shorter than required for a bed surely? I haven't put this into practice myself but had the idea for a while now as a solution for myself. It could pose a problem as the inner poles could get pushed too far inwards making the bunk slip out of the brackets, but i'm sure with a little thinking cap on a bodge could get me through? I don't have the bunk to try it, but maybe an idea;-)

plastic hooks for 32mm dia poles should be quite simple to make to fit.
I measured just above grab handles but didn't seem right too high!
I then measured below grab handles 153cm(need to measure more accuratly or buy poles 155cm & cut to fit.should be some retro canvas suitable for bunks on ebay under marine supplies.I believe electrics go down one or the other front pillars so need to take care..

I extended the poles for the just kampers roof bunks with a piece of dowel very sucessfully.
I have a JK bunk for sale if anyone is interested. The poles are long enough to be cut down to go across the cab, you would just need to make up the cab canvas bit (which I'm not sure about how to do)
Jules, I don't know how to make up brackets, my father-in-law knocked some up for me.

sorry I've not replied sooner! I'll try to sort some pics of the brackets I have.
The key things for the front bunk are:
the brackets
the poles
the canvas bit
I got my brackets off the 'bay, as I say I'll post some pics. I was wondering if it was possible to make a set. I can send you dimensions if your interested? The rear brackets (on the B posts) are just normal cab brackets (I have a couple spare knocking about you can have if you want)
The poles I have are from the long bunks I originally had in the roof. They are too long to go across the van so will need cutting down.
I baught some canvas (again off the 'bay) for the bunk itself so I'll have a crack at sewing that together soon. I managed to find the most hideous blue and pink chequered pattern, which should nicely clash with everthing else in the van!

I got a chance to fit the bits I have today. The front brackets fit under the grab handles. They look quite complex, but I think it would be pretty easy to make some.
and the rear mounts are simply screwed to the wood behind the B pillar
I still need sort the "canvas" itself. I'll find out whether my sewing machine is up to it!
and for those who are interested, this is what I did to make the JK bunk poles long enough for the roof. Pretty straight forward really! Theres about 1 foot of dowel inside the pole to make sure its strong enough.

Nice work so far,those brackets under handle are cool.
if you are a learner at sewing a few tips:
use strong thread, if you can snap it by hand it's no much good!
when you start to sew go up & down at start & finnish for about an inch,will stop it from coming undone.make sure you allow enough room for the pole to allow it through with ease it's easy to get it wrong.if the fabric is think use a thicker needle,hope that helps

thanks Chris - useful tips - I've never sewn anything thick before. I made Jessica's curtains quite easily but the fabric is quite thin (so I can wake up nice and early

no I got the front brackets off the 'bay, advertised as Commer items (maybe autosleeper?) but they looks as though they could be easily made at home.
I had another look today and I think it would be easy to make some front brackets with a length of 1" wide flat bar and a plastic bunk mount bolted to the bottom. Are you into originality? If so I can take some detailed dimensions for making an "original" set.
