If it's any consolation, I have changed the water pump twice this weekend on my Commer Imp van, and drained the cooling system 3 times, as the 3 way connector decided to spring a leak after I had finished today...
Thanks for the advice Andy, Yes it has over heated and lost about 2 Liters of water [

Sounds like a new rad job to me - or a head gasket (or both). I'd get the flow rate of the existing rad checked. The cooling system is marginal at best, so it's always a good policy to have a new High Efficency Radiator fitted. Do compression test on the cylinders to see if there is any leakage, check for bubbles at the rad cap when running etc.
You need to speak to Uncle Malcolm in Somerset.

I went to the Imp club meeting on Wednesday and they agreed with what Andy said that the Radiator could be at fault, so I purchased a re-cored one,
Fitted today went for a 10 mile run up the M60 and the needle never moved above ¼ so fingers crossed no more overheating.[8D][8D]
I did however manage to damage the heater matrix when I was cleaning the pipes out on Saturday the outlet connecter cracked so I by-passed it[!][!]
Spent the last 3 hours stripping out the dash board getting the heater box out and fitting a replacement. Now the heater control valve doesn’t fit the new matrix so have to locate a replacement

Standard Imp heater control valves are prone to failure. I have done away with mine altogether and fitted a 15mm shut off valve in the hose that goes from the engine, along the right hand sill and up over the driver's side wheelarch to the heater. I fitted it near the driver's right knee so it's easy to reach and it works a treat!
