I have been in a well sorted one (well, reasonably) driven by a copper - and that's given me a scare or two! :D

That's funny, being a copper with a well sorted Imp I've had a big girl's blouse in the passenger seat whimpering away......

The head gasket was on its way out when we went looking for that battery - it goes even better now[}:)]

It's much easier to change the points on an Imp. I used to maintain my brother's M*n*, and it was a right pain to get to the distributor. Foretunately, he crashed it - so I didn't have to bother with that anymore, however, he did then buy an even worse car - in the form of an MG Metro. Yuck!

The boggo standard 1.0 litre Metros we used as Pandas in the 80s didn't half take a lot of abuse! Bloody good really. Would never have one though.

Couple of problems,[:0] Temperature gauge goes almost to red and the heater is only aired think it might have an air lock will investigate tomorrow. :(

Lots of info on the Imp club forum re sorting airlocks etc. The temp gauge may be a mis-match of sender and gauge.

Easiest way to sort airlock in heater is disconnect the exit hose (top one in the boot) and then reconnect it after a few seconds when coolant starts coming out. Also, clamping the bypass hose with a pair of mole grips helps as it make the coolant go around the heater circuit. I now have a plumber's valve in the bypass so I can close it when I want to bleed to heater - but the mole grips will do the same job, as will a brake pipe clamp. Once you have coolant coming out of the exit of the heater, and have reconnected the hose, use the bleed valve by the rad to get the any remaining air out.

Make sure you do this operation when the engine is cold and the thermostat is closed. Run the engine around 1200 rpm, and a few blips of the throttle won't hurt, and that will hopefully help get the air out. Once the engine is up to running temp and the thermostat is open, close off the valve. Things to bear in mind is that the quality of the heater valves is poor, and these often dont allow much water past them, open or not. Are you getting hot air out of the heater?

It's also recommended to to get a High Efficency Rad, if you haven't already got one. It make a big difference to the marginal cooling.

Thanks Baz & Andy got some radiator flush today,
Gave it a got flushing out ran, plenty of cold water through the system got the heater working fine for a few minutes then it started to over heat,
Flused it out again, he ran for a couple of mile then the temperature went up and it over heated again,
Thinking it might be the thermostat that is sticking or if not could it be the head gasket? :(:(

Are you getting bubbles in the top of the rad when running with the cap off? Are you losing coolant? Has it actually overheated. I recommend using an infrared temp thingy and measure the temp of the thermostat cap when the engine is hot. I had the same issue with babs, changed the rad, flushed etc - before Baz and I measured the temps at various points of the cooling system and discovered that the temp guage was over reading.

What is the colour of the temp sender unit? There are different types, so you might have the wrong one fitted!

Good luck

A

If it's any consolation, I have changed the water pump twice this weekend on my Commer Imp van, and drained the cooling system 3 times, as the 3 way connector decided to spring a leak after I had finished today...

Alternatively chuck it away and buy a moggy 1000 and revel in the mecano simplicity of every job on them. they will also do 93 miles an hour........engine rebuild followed a few weeks later:I[xx(]:D.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labottomy!

Only 93, must've been a saloon ;) luckily the flat rear profile of my traveller creates a low pressure area at that sort of speed, with the resulting vortices giving it a little 'shove' [8D]:D

I don't know anything about imp heaters, but to increase the ambient temperature inside the car, I reckon this guy has got the right idea
