I apologise if I have stepped on toes. I was the first person to bid on ebay and I had made arrangements to view the van the night it came up for sale. I went to assess the condition.... not to buy the van but I was offered a deal. I think anyone who was seriously interested in this van would have taken that deal. Sorry.

Woolfy there's an order coming your way very soon once my pocket has recovered from some reckless spending! I may well be removing the highroof so if anyone has a complete roof without a pop top I would be keen to hear from you.

Pics coming soon and the welder's ready once these pesky VW's stop getting in the way!

It has been quite a lucky week but don't they say good things come in 3's.....???

I know there won't be any bad feeling - disappointment yes but definitely no animosity. That's the thing with ebay the auctions are blind now so you have no idea who you are bidding against - I guess if you did then you could really fall out (or rig the auction [:0])
I for one am glad such a rare beast has gone to a forum member, one who will accept the van for what it is, one who will love and cherish the very fibre of it's being and who will constantly rub our noses in the fact he has got the oldest van on the forum (maybe) ;)
How much patina are we keeping on this one M&2 [}:)]

steady,,,tin top [?]
Is this the earliest van we have seen ?
have you looked into any badges it is wearing?
don't be to hasty, perhaps look into the history a bit first [?]
IE what conversion would it have been originally [?]
Hopefully martin watts could shed some light on it [?]

I think I'll go for this instead - any one going to bid against me [}:)]

25,000 he obviously wants to come to some arrangement away from ebay [:0]
nice try though mr pankhurst didn't quite take my mind off bluebell though lol

If the highroof is part of the original conversion I would keep it but i think it was a later addition.
It has car-camper badges on it but the interior is gone apart from the cupboards on the rear doors.
The history file with the van is pretty sparse but from what i can see I get the impression the van was converted when it was a few years old not new. This was common with VW's so I presume also with Commers? If anyone has any early car-camper literature I would love to see it....

The log book says that the van was first registered on 16th August 1960. I'm not sure how long it was generally between the van being built and then being registered though? The chassis number is in the high 004000's if this helps

wow now your talking [^]interesting stuff..yes am familier with what vdubbers do :I(only joking)you darksider you [:0]the hippies are to blame ;)
ah perhaps the roof doubles as a boat :p
she won't be much of a bluebell with out that roof :)
sure you don't want to swap for an auto sleeper or some hard cash ;)

if only these old wrecks could tell us whats been done to them over the years...
so how excited are you [?]

Sybhil & no1

Very excited. Just love that early front panel. Little bit undecided how to tackle it as far as how I want it to be once finished. I would love it to be a lovely original early car-camper but there's so much missing and I don't think it's history is that clear cut. And I'm not the biggest fan of the roof as it is.

If I could find a suitable donor setup I may consider turning it back to a panel van?

It'll come in a moment of inspiration!

congratulations! glad to hear there is another commer hover further south to cover the bases!

mine is a 65 car camper
http://www.commervanfan.co.uk/10.htm

afraid to say there is no interior in mine any longer but it was near identical to the autosleeper layout.

maybe the PA should get restored this year then... we're moving this weekend, its moving the weekend after.

That front end is pretty :p
That sounds fair enough :)
But I loved her as she is ;)
still hope martin watts can shed some light though.
how about an auto sleeper & hard cash lol

small, well rounded and go a bit mushy if left in salt water :D;)

If you have access to it anywhere, Martin Watts has written a great book on Classic Camper interiors which has a good section on Car-camper. I'll not offer to copy pages for you without his permission - but there are some great reference photos in there of interiors.
