Blocked radiator

The rad in the Iceman is the original and although watertight it is in very poor condition. All the thin fins are turning to dust at the slightest touch:( In anticipation of it failing i found a second rad which looked in perfec nic. Only after flushing the crap and spiders out i can now see that the inside looks like its full of limescale. So much so the vertical tubes seem to be mostly blocked. Normal back flushing has no effect as it is quite hard and it seems a shame to have to get it recored. Is there any way to 'dislove' the gunk?

I think the only sensible thing to do is to get it recored,

It might not be the cheapest option, but given the at best marginal cooling - surely it's the best thing to do to avoid having cooling issues.
 
Get yourself some caustic soda and stick it in, this works wonders and will strip the inside to bare metal, just be a bit careful as its nasty stuff. Failing that a fill it up with coke and soak it overnight ;)

Thats a good idea 'racer. I do hope caustic soda is not the 'cleaning' ingredient in coke!!!

sorry i didnt relise you were in new zealand , silly me , any wayas tim says any phosphoric acid based fluid will do the trick, or oxalic acid may do the trick far cheaper than recore,
