my van was running great until the other day when it started misfiring and kicking out black smoke,,i hope its nothing major, i think it might be ignition timing,,does anyone know if you can get an electronic ignition from anywhere....thanks matt
Hi Mattstra, fingers crossed nothing nasty on the smoke front - my knowledge not entirely up to speed (bit like my van) but I know that Bessie has had electronic ignition fitted of some kind before I had her. afraid it is an unknown system so I can't tell you what it came from, only that I have one and it is possible to do. If I get a chance, I'll get some pics sorted in case someone will recognise system.
It seems o.k. - has the odd funny 5 minutes but often starts first crank
Black smoke usually means very rich mixture, maybe you've picked up a bit of crap from the tank and there's a blocked jet somewhere. Try starting the engine with the filter off, give it a good rev and put your hand over the air inlet. This sometimes dislodges small blockages, if it doesn't work no harm in checking and blowing the jets through before you shell out on electronic ignition.
as panky says, black smoke = rich mixture. sounds like over fuelling, possibly float level or pressure regulator, choke sticking ,blocked air filter.good luck.
"you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off"
