big spline drive shaft end...

Yes great idea. Large Industrial equipment has this principle as standard practice from original design. The "Wearing Sleeve" as it's known is generally thicker and part of a Seal Kit, to be replaced with the seal as a set. It protects the shaft from wear and is cheap compared to replacing major and very expensive shafts and components. The principle isn't used in automotive parts that I have come across, so this Speedie Sleeve is a good thing to know. Passenger cars do a fraction of the hours that industrial equipment can do and the added cost not warranted, for most modern cars which are scraped before a seal would need replacing.

A word of warning, I work for Atlas Copco in Compressor Spare Parts and it is common for Large industrial compressors to be rebuilt and find oil still seems to be leaking from a seal, even after both the seal and wearing sleeve have been replaced. The problem is usually that the wearing sleeve has not been sealed/mounted to the shaft and the oil is actually finding its way between the shaft and the wearing sleeve giving the appearance that the seal has failed again. The "interference fit" of the sleeve is not enough to create a seal, there are various Loctite type products for mounting wearing sleeves to ensure no "leak through" of the oil/fluid the seal is designed to retain.

Cheers Stephen

What a brilliantly simple idea[8D]

Thanks chaps...it states you need to fill the pitting with a locktite type product anyway and to put the ring on before it hardens which would do the trick. The ring i need hopefully is available as there is a gap in sizes right around where my inaccurate measuring technique points to, once i get the micrometer ill know for sure

Jimberlake: So does tht mean you will have an overdrive prop shaft with a decent centre secion going spare soon?

Reason I ask is that my prop has loose journals on the middle section only, but the UJs, gearbox end and pinion flange are all OK, and I was going to get it rebuilt at some point. But if I could lay my hands on a decent middle section..............

Hi Colin...fraid not as will just need the end yoke as the centre is cut to the right length for the overdrive. I guess the one from martin would be from a standard gearbox

Thanks Martin...picked up a perfect large splined drive shaft today, rubbed and painted and looks factory new. Two rear seals later (need an exact socket size to knock it in I found) and looking forward to not having oil covered rear doors after every trip.

Colin...yes I have a OD shaft available now...its one with grease nipples and the bit you want has no play. Not sure about costs to send your way though. Let me know if interested and can strip it back as much as possible for you. PM me
