basic info on parts needed

Hi All,

My search for a friendly local 'commer-hospital' continues, and at present Simon is still parked up looking sad. Had a 'classic car' type garage lined up, but alas, no call back, and when I call them they said they were still flat out. One last try (I know, i've said that before :)) at a different place, and the guy actually sounded quite enthusiastic, looks like they will at least take it in in the next couple of weeks and see what's up. Problem is he asked me to try and get some bits for it, but due to the fact that I don't have a clue about anything mechanical, when he started talking what I consider to be technical, the mind went all white and my brain started to hurt :D Basically, he said, get a new set of points, and also a new condenser and a new battery. Ok, I know what a battery is (just), but looking through the speedy spares list, need some guidance re the condenser and points. Do points just mean spark plugs?? What is a condenser? And also, is there a particular type/size of battery that I should try and get? Sorry, I know these are uber-basic and embarassingly simple questions. Any help hugely appreciated!

Pick up the phone to speedys - they are SO helpful; I had many conversations above and beyond the normal "order line" service long before I set up the forum.

As for battery I would suggest a local auto factor rather than PFYs at Halfords who only seem to be able to reference a book on the shop floor and attempt to lookup "Commer" I will be visiting the van later so can tell you what we opted for for a 1725 1969 engine.

Battery type is an 063 - getting rarer but still supported by Lion, Unipart & Bosch.
The points, condenser, Rotor, cap etc are Lucas generic - any motor fitted with Lucas 45D dizzy (eg mini, 4 cyl Triumph, late midget, Land Rover etc as well as Rootes/Hillman products) will support these items

Thanks for advice guys. Will call Speedyspares tomorrow. Any idea where to source the 063 battery? I looked for them online, and on the Bosch website, but couldn't see any that were specific to the Commer.

It isnt specific to the Commer, its a type 063. You dont need to look for Commer, just for type 063. Or type 067 if that fits too - thats a bit bigger so will be dearer / higher crank capacity - as long as it fits.

If you tell your mechanic its a 063 or 067 battery and a Lucas 45D he wont have any problems sourcing the bits. If he needs hydraulic units, well thats where I'm getting unstuck.

They can be re-sealed, but new rubbers wont put lost metal back on the bore. So then they have to be rebored and honed, but this can only be done if there are still pistons around, which in the case of Lockheed there arent. What is really annoying / frustrating for me at work is that Lockheed (now part of British Aerospace) still have the press tooling to produce these parts but they arent interested in doing so, or selling the tooling.
