i went to beullie a couple of years ago and there was a Dutch (i Think) guy with a stall and he had some complete joints among other spares..I can't remember his name, he did use to come on here a long time ago...he had come over in a highwayman...I'm sure it had quite a unique suspension set up...ring any bells??

New MOT nice:p. We had an advisory on the steering idler a couple of years ago. Speedies do the bushes and the pin and the job was no probelm expet for extracting the old pin. It took some blow torch action and a bearing press.;)

Thought I'd dust off this load of drivel and pen a few words of caution to those embarking om any clutch work.
It all started earlier in the year when I re-built Harvey's engine, while I was at it I decided to fit a new clutch plate as I'd not long bagged one off ebay. You may remember I had a bit of trouble with the clutch but eventually got it sorted even though it didn't seem quite right.
The gearbox was one I had to bits to adapt to take the overdrive and has always been a bit crunchy going into 3rd and 4th but on the trip to martins it got worse. A couple of weeks ago it became almost undrivable, coming home from Tatton Park show I had trouble getting any gears and I decided to swap the box. I had one I'd purchased for Bonnie but as it turned out it wasn't very good, that's when I sent out my plea for another, but when I was stripping everything off to take the box out I noticed there was very little travel in the slave cylinder - strange since I fitted new seals a couple of months ago. I took it apart and realised what I'd done, the seal kit consisted of a piston ready fitted with the seals so I cleaned everything up and plopped it in. The original cylinder was of a different type and there was domed a plastic guide that fitted to the return spring - stupid me left it in when the spring should have fitted to the end of the new piston, I'd lost nearly an inch of travel. So I put the old box back in thinking I'd solved the problem - no chance[V] Now I couldn't get any gears at all with the engine running, bugger I bet I've put the plate in the wrong way round I thought - so off came the box again. Nope, it was fine and I was very puzzled, I noticed the thrust bearing was a bit worn and was spinning in it's housing, so I reckoned it could have gone past the point of leverage so wasn't pushing against he cover plate enough to disengage the clutch. Mr M duly supplied one for me and the box went back on with the new bearing and a new cover plate, I didn't replace the pressure plate as that was new a couple of months previously. Bugger and bugger again still nothing, 'I wonder if the master cylinder is sticking' I thought as I lay on my back with the rain forming rivulets on my sloping drive and slowly soaking into my overalls. A few swift whacks with the handle of my ratchet on the master cylinder did nothing except to knock the rust out of a pinhole in the reservoir, as the Easibleed was still attached it looked like Harvey was having a pee. A few more buggers ensued and I decided to bite the bullet, new master and slave cylinders where ordered and again Mr M came up trumps.
So today they arived, all shiney and new, a matched pair so I knew they just had to work..............no chance[V][V][V][V][V][:(!] Getting a bit peeved by this time - but at least it's not raining:I The hydraulics were working perfectly, good travel at the gearbox end and as Barb pressed the pedal, peering in with a torch, I could see the movement being transfered to thecover plate. Surely I havent put the plate in the wrong way round, I'm sure I've missed a few box removals it seemed a lot more than I've described, so off it came again[:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!] and...............plate in the right way[V]
The only thing I hadn't changed was the pressure plate, so I thought sod it there's a bit of meat left on the old one - put it back in and see what happens. It was only when I had both of them together laying on top of the freezer that I noticed the difference[8)] The 'new' one was standing over a quarter of an inch higher than the old one. As it turned out the centre boss is a lot deeper on the flywheel side compared with the original one, all I can think is that the longer boss was touching the flywheel and forcing it against the cover plate even when the clutch was engaged, causing it to drag. I had to find out so the old plate went back in and I got everything re-built in just over an hour and that's with putting the oil in as well - I've had plenty of practice. And the result........ a perfectly working clutch at last:) A test run showed the crunching is still there in 3rd and top but nowhere near as bad as before - halleh flippin loooo yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
The lesson here is if you but something off ebay 'just in case' make sure it's the right one before you fit it :I

How refreshing

Holy hell John...
I lost count of the 'ins and outs'. What a nightmare. Still no better man than you to find out the problem and fix it. I can relate just a little after ith trouble I had with icemans clutch.

I just need a good rootes...

I've always just fitted new master and slave cylinders (or professionally refurbed ones), never trusted just fitting new seals. Glad you got it sorted John.

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Got lost about here..'pinhole in the reservoir' but i know that you are more than equal to the job unlike i;) Mister Pankhurst, if you need my help just say yeah...........HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
