Back of the garage

aww, don't beat yourself up over it...I think you are very brave for rebuilding it in the first place mate:) ...and at least chuck all the bits in a bucket, we don't want you tripping over and falling down that pit:D

The floor's the best place for bits of engine, that way you can't drop them any further and loose them:)

Speedies sped and supplied the correct big-end shells last week so the re-build has begun in earnest. The crank is a weight old lump of iron and it was a tad awkward holding it in place from underneath with one hand while trying to fit a bearing cap with the other, but I managed - without injuring myself:) The pistons are in and all bearings tightened up to the correct torque - and it still turns[^] Tomorrow it will be the timing gears turn then oil pump and sump, I'll have to wait until Monday for the head after it's birthday - cleaned, hot pressure tested, skimmed and valves seats re-cut - also sent for a new set of valves to complete the job, can't wait:p

Just having a catch up on threads, Coo blimey Panky your brave "It should have clicked when the woman

That's not The woman that's Joan, she who knows all there is to know about Rootes group vehicles :D:D It's a brave man that challenges Joans knowledge. ;);)

It's my fault it's my fault I know - still all sorted now:)
She, Joan, did have a wealth of information at her fingertips. I'll remember her name next time I call:I

I've had this week off with the intention of finishing the engine and maybe get away for a couple of days, well we won't be heading off just yet:I I've spent every day crawling under and over Harvey my muscles are acheing in places I never knew I had muscles, I've got Commer engine bay forearms (covered in scratches, why do they make everything in there so sharp) and the drains are struggling to cope with the crap I wash off myself every night[xx(]
But I'm nearly there just the gearbox, prop, exhaust and carb to go back on. I even remembered to line the dizzy drive up properly this time - 180 degrees out last time[8)] so I'll need to re-set the timing.
The shopping list goes like this:
New rings (bores were perfect)
New mains shells
New big end shells
New oil pump
Head skimed (only six thou, sorry Tim:I)
Valve seats re-cut
New valve guides
New valves
and I'll be putting a new clutch plate in, the old one has plenty of life left in it but what the hell:)
One of the rocker shafts had had it so I scavenged one of my spare engine, along with a multitude of bolts I'd, ahem, misplaced[8)]

Some head bling[8D]

Unfortunately the big fire-up never happened[8)] So many bits and bobs to sort out but everything is ready for tomorrow (if I get time between stuffing my face with chocolate:p). The gearbox was a struggle but all bolted up now, exhaust on and the steering linkages all back together. I had a little set back when I noticed the gear change rod was a little sloppy so I gave it a pull, as you do, and what was left of the nylon bush fell out in bits[xx(] New ones ordered from Martin but it will be Wednesday before they can get here. I've no idea if the box is in gear so I left the prop off while I fiddled about just in case. I filled the sump with some lovely green Halfords classic 20-50, connected the battery and pushed the button. The engine spun freely and the oil light soon went out - which was nice:I
My knees were just about giving up so I called it a day, so tomorrow it's a case of setting the timing, connecting the accelerator and choke cables and contact:)

I'll have to top it up with something, I was laying in half the contents that had leaked out of the prop end[xx(]
