Back of the garage

Harvey will always be a bit rough and ready, the ladies like it that way[8D]
One thing though - he gave up smoking when he had his Rapier heart fitted[^] Now he just fumes:I

Unfortunately the gearbox still jumps out of top on the overrun occasionaly but I'll put up with it for now. The run to Angelsey a couple of weeks ago threw up a few problems, fuel vaporisation (I thought), speedo not working and overdive packed up[V]
The reluctance to start was easily fixed by topping up the dashpot on the SU (remember to check more often) but the speedo was very annoying as I'd fitted a new cable a while ago and all I got was the occasional flicker then back to zero. I thought it must be the guage end so I took the dash panel off (broke another bit off:I) and pushed the plastic ferule on the inner cable a bit so the end would fit further into the head of the speedo. A quick test run and.....nothing[V] I disconnected the cable from the gearbox end and turned it with my fingers - the needle on the gauge moved so that end must be OK I thought. Next I jacked one side of the van up and turned the rear wheel and I could see the centre of the speedo drive turning so that bit was fine as well. It turned out to be that end of the inner cable was too big to fit into the square of the drive[xx(] so a bit of fettling (I butchered it a bit:I) and at last I could tell how fast I was going.
The overdrive is a bit more puzzling it works perfectly but after a while blows the fuse in the relay, I've traced all the wires and points where it cold have been chaffing on the body work but not really found anything so I've put another fuse in and will see what happens. It always blows as the OD is switched off so I'm thinking the solenoid, I've got a spare so if it happens again I'll change it, Wish me luck:)

It was supposed to be a genuine old stock one I got off ebay and it looked just the same as the one that broke. I'm guessing the end of the old one was worn enough to fit into the drive of the Hunter OD box:I(is it a different size to the Commer one) Still it's working OK at the moment.

I just presumed it would be different I don't know :I
if it works don't worry about it :D[}:)]:D

Could it be your solenoid is getting a bit weak and drawing too much current [?]
and good luck ;)

"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Had the most frustrating day[:(!] The flippin overdrive is overdriving me nuts.
Still blowing fuses so swapped out the solenoid for my spare, biggest part of that job was finding a spanner thin enough to get to the hexagon on the sov. All was well sitting on the drive the OD clicked in and out a treat so went for a test run - flicked the OD on in third, the engaged warning light came on and the OD clicked in - changed up to top and it packed up[V], another fuse gone. Next thing to swap was the fused relay, this was where the fuse was blowing so I fitted a none fused one and ran a new wire from the fuse box to the relay. Loads of faffing about but eventually got it sorted - OD working a treat on the drive but again on the road it worked once then nothing. This time the fuse that had popped was the one for the gearknob switch so the carpet came out and I ran new cable from the swich through to the relay and fuse box - still no bloody good[xx(] The fuses seemed to fail as I changed up to top so I wondered if the inhibitor switch on the gearbox was faulty so I shorted it out and............:(
It looks like I'm going to have to change the rest of the wiring as there must be a short somewhere - the good thing is there's not much left to change:I

shall i let you into a little secret mate. ive had this exact same problem in my old triumph 2000s. easy fix is to wrap the fuse in silver foil and stick in back into its holder, it will nevr blow again. job done.:p;):D

Lol, Woolfy, and yes the fuse still sits on the driveway.Where the Triumph sat before it burst in flames :D

Sorted:)
After taking every wire out, checking them, finding nothing, fitting new spade connectors and re-routing them it turned out to be a faulty warning light:I When everything was back together I flicked the switch and could here the OD clicking in and out but the light wasn't coming on, I put a tester across the wires and power was there. A good run out and everything worked perfectly - except for the lamp so I can only assume that was the problem all along (Bernie suggested as much yesterday) - it was a sealed unit bought from Halfords[V] - I've got some proper Rootes ones somewhere, the type with the rotating dimmer lens, so I'll fit one when I find them - somwhere in the garage:I

Peggy doesn't have a warning light for the O/D - at least one doesn't come on......................

I thought it would be a good idea to have a warning light as the OD is not self-cancelling when you change gear, there is an inhibitor switch so it won't engage in 1st 2nd or reverse but it's nice to know if I forget to swich it off:I

On Peggy, when it's working properly, as soon as you change down from O/D 4th the O/D cuts out so you go into normal 3rd. Likewise from O/d 3rd up into 4th, then you engage O/D 4th. It cuts out automatically.

Unfortunately Peggy's linkage is so worn that it won't stay in O/D 4th without me holding the lever so I'm thinking about by-passing the inhibitor for now. I'm sure I've read that the 60s rally cars had O/D working on all forward gears.
