Back of the garage

I hope Barb was the anaesthetist and gave Harvey enough sedation I wouldn't like to think of him suffering. Maybe I should have been around to assist you both.

Gladys :)

Shame [xx(] its not really a good idea to mix up gears/shafts from different sets, as they tend to not like it [B)]
probably a meshing issue :(

I'm not meshing about - it's about to happen again:I
But this time it will only the main shaft, the input shaft and layshaft will match - here's hoping:)

Someone told me that you cant just change the input shaft and bell housing on the rapier box for the commer one to make it fit as itdoesnt mesh right,is this waht your doing?;)

A commer with boost will be appering on a screen near you soon!

That's exactly what I did and it looks like you information is correct[V]
This time I'm going to use the OD mainshaft and fit it to my replacement Commer box, using the gears etc from that box - that way the gears will remain a matching set.

How have you got on today - have you been working on Harvey Panky? You had been concerned with the gears for some time hadn't you? I thought our gears had gone when I put Fonty into drive earlier, moved and heard a massive crunch - turns out I had just run over the tool box :I

Ouch the old flat toolbox routine - never a good thing to happen[xx(]
Yep I've been delving into cogs, syncro hubs and detent balls again today but I decided my ancient B&D workmate wasn't up to the job so I packed everything into the boot of the car and headed into work to make use of the workshop facilities. Everything got a good scrubbing in the component washer before I stripped out the mainshaft from the knackered gearbox - this time leaving the rear bearing in the housing, tapping the shaft through it and removing the first gear cog and syncro assembly through the top aperture (I know it's cheating but sometimes it actually helps to read the manual:I). The rest of the gear cluster came off without any drama but I did notice the front lock nut had backed off and there was about 1/4" of play between it and the rest of the gubbins[:0].
Next it was on to the replacement box purchased from Scotty when we went to Coventry (your reputation as a parts distributor is riding on this Scotty;)) I sacrificed a set of selector fork shafts to make shorted dummy ones that are used to drive out the shafts in the gearbox and retain the detent balls and springs in place - it paid off as this was the first time I didn't loose at least one into the rafters[^] I was toying with the idea of chopping down the spare layshaft to make a dummy one but it is hardened and a hacksaw wouldn't touch it so a piece of conduit was used instead to drift the layshaft out and hold the needle rollers at each end in place. Again the strip down of the mainshaft was straight forward and I set about transferring the gear cluster onto the overdrive mainshaft, one thing I did notice that there was a a slight nick in the centre of the teeth on the first gear wheel, as if it had picked up on something in it's long life, so I toyed with the idea of fitting the good one from the Rapier box - trouble is it's a smaller diameter so higher geared, another piece of evidence to show that the two units are not the same[V] but at least final drive is the same at 1:1. After all the practice on the old box the final re-build went almost according to plan except I fitted the layshaft back into position before I fitted the input shaft so had to drift it out again - it's a bit nerve wracking as there are 27 little needle rollers at either end of the shaft and if one drops out then it's time to strip the whole thing down again:I Anyway the second attempt went OK so I now have a gearbox ready to take the bell housing and OD unit before sticking it back under Harvey - busy day tomorrow:)

WOW. To be honest, you lost me at cogs :D. To have Harvey up and running again, in a weekend is very impressive!!

The only plan I've got is to get Harvey back on the road - I'm just going for it. It was broke anyway so I reckon I can't break it much more:I
If anyone has got a spare OD box laying around I might be putting out a plea for help soon[8)]
