yeah right! I have seen your attraction with fire! like when you wanted to explore the source at Coventry.....when you tried to stick your head in it at Woolfy's
It's been a while but Harvey is back in for some much needed gearbox surgery[V] The whine that's been there since he was back on the road developed to the point it was almost deafening and the last time we were out some strange banging noises added to the cacophony, enough is enough.
After clearing a space big enough to get him over the pit I scrubbed up, put on my greens and mask and proceeded to pull the gearbox out. First job was to drain the oil, it looked a little cruddy considering it's only done a couple of thousand miles and the little pile of metal chunks that had gathered in the drain plug suggested something was seriously wrong. After a couple of hours with the scalpel I finally had it on the floor (it was nice to be on my back again with crap in my hair and eyes) Once the 'box was on my trusty old workmate the top was off in a couple of minutes and the first glance inside revealed what all the noise was about - a distinct lack of complete teeth on the front gear of the laysaft cluster and 4th had considerable damage - strange since it was only ever quiet in top:I
I've started stripping it down to swap the mainshaft over to the replacement gearbox because the overdrive one is different to that fitted to a standard unit. I've also found out you can't take it out complete as 1st gear won't fit through the hole in the casing, oh well knock it all back together tomorrow and try again:I
