Hopefully Harvey is sorted for now, we'll have to wait and see. Going out now but will post more details later.

Harvey the RV

I got up and out early this morning - 10.30 (well it is Saturday:I) and set about the problem. First off I started the engine up to see what I could see - nothing, not a leak, not a drip and the oil light went out straight away - puzzling[?] I was about to start ripping things off to see if I could spot anything obvious but first I checked the oil level - it was way up the dipstick - about 2" above the high level. Yesterday, when the oil light came on I checked the level and couldn't see anything so I put half a gallon in that I had in the van - so I thought I'd better drain some off. A bowl was strategically placed and the sump plug undone - I drained off what I thought was about half of what was in there but was puzzled how thin the oil seemed, after all I'd stuck a load of fresh oil in only the day before - and it stank of petrol, you could see the petrol fumes in the air around the sump drain as the oil drained off. I knew the engine was running very rich but I didn't think it could have that much of an effect but after draining the rest off (nearly two gallons in all) I put some fresh stuff in to see what happened. I whipped off the thermostat and water pump housings as I was convinced the oil that was streaming out yesterday was coming from just under the stat housings, I ran the engine up briefly but everything was fine with not a dribble in sight so it all went back together. So the carb nedds adjustin g but to adjust the mixture on the SU set up is impossible with the carb in situ so it came out, along with the manifold, so I could get to the mixture screw. It was actually very easy, only three manifold bolts and the lot slid out with everything connected except the fuel line. After four or five attempts I think I've got it pretty close with a nice blue spark seen through my Gunsens Colourtune plug - there is definitely a difference in the settings as the idle screw needed loads of adjustment to keep the idle up and the choke was needed for much longer - and the exhaust fumes are far less dense. While I had the engine good and hot I adjusted the valve clearances which got rid of my rattly top end and finished off with another oil change but this time filter as well so now I know the oil system has been purged of the petrol.
I've tried to figure out the series of events that led up to yesterdays trouble. Harvey was had been parked on the drive the opposite way to normal - facing down the sloping drive and, as he has a bit of a tail up attitude, about him so he sits nose down. When I moved him to start loading up for my daughters move I noticed a fair old patch of oil on the drive (always dry before). We pulled away and almost immediately the oil light came on so I pulled over and checked the level - topped up and tried again - oil light still on and oil spewing out everywhere. I turned round and drove back up the drive and just before I switched off the oil light went out - that was the last thing I did until this morning. I think what has happened is that either the super rich mixture has washed down the bores into the sump and thinned the oil so much that the oil pump simply couldn't cope and the pressure dropped off. When I topped the oil up it went way above the crankshaft oil seals and being so thin just gushed through and was thrown around by the pulley giving the impression it was coming from higher up. As I got onto the drive again the fresh oil had finally given the pump something to work on and the pressure went up.
Another theory is that somehow petrol had syphoned into the engine as Harvey stood pointing down the drive for a few days (with a full tank of juice on board) but he did start easily that morning so maybe not. The plugs were well sooted up so I'm going with the super rich scenario for now and just hope that no serious damage has been done - time will tell:I

well done mate hope that has sorted the problem out[^] dont hang about do you:) i would still be scratching my head:I:D

Blimey [:0] bit of an odd scenario there Panky [?]
must have been exceedingly rich, did it not smoke [?]
unless the float needle isn,t seating and/or the leccy fuel pump then your explanation sounds feasable, this does happen with methanol burners.
hopefully all is now well and Harvey will be crusin the streets as normal [8D]

"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

Still running the mechanical pump, he did smoke a bit but the fumes were very strong rather than black. Very little choke was needed and came off almost straight away. If I have anymore probs I'll check out the float.

Much to his disgust Harvey was pressed into service as a removals van today - he hates work, just wants to go on holiday all the time:I After Fridays panic he performed well, I was paranoid and listened to every noise, checked the oil level at least half a dozen times and peered underneath for signs of an oil leak every time we stopped. The move was only 3 or 4 miles away but we did the trip many times, it was hot and humid out there but Harvey kept his cool with lekky the fan cutting in when it should and the oil light staying firmly off[^] He wasn't as responsive as he was before (or is that me being cautious) so I may need to fiddle with the carb again but not until he's had a good run out (Commerfest[8D]) and no more petrol diluted oil woes encountered for a while.

Hi Panky
Just a thought is it possible that the fuel pump has been leaking petrol into the sump[?]

Gladys, Heidi & Bernie will be there and we have a sticker to prove it

That was one of my theories so I won't park him pointing down hill for a while, time will tell:I
I'v just realised what you meant, leaking fuel direct into the sump and not through the carb. I've got a spare pump so that's one of the jobs to swap it out - nice one Bernie thanks.

That's a very odd problem and well done for getting on top of it! I think Bernie's on to something here - with the tail up, gravity may have fed the pump which for some reason may be leaking into the engine. Oh well, at least you've had a good engine flush!

All the elaborate explanations I came up with and Bernie put his super smooth finger on it straight away[^]

Not a very good pic but the damage to the diaphragm is pretty obvious. A steady drip drip straight into the sump[xx(]

Let's hope thats an end to it now I've fitted a new pupm.
