If any one wants to have a go with this exhaust set up here are the part numbers:-
Round silencer SE 27 GT - £19
Oval silencer FT 688 HB - £23
I chopped and changed things around a bit and ended up with the silencers clamped to each other and the round one clamped to the front pipe - so future replacements should be straight forward without too much cutting and welding. I also used two 48mm bends (£5 each) in the construction and an 18" length of 48mm tube for the tailpipe. It could be adapted to fit the standard Commer downpipe with a reducer.
Apart from the twin downpipes and 'Y' piece all the bits came from a local supplier called Hamp Products but I'm sure there are similar outlets everywhere.

A big cheers for those details Panky, I'll definately check how the price/effort compares locally with chopping and welding an RC40 to mate up to our standard downpipe.

Unfortunately our existing silencer has totally blown, so our van is virtually unusable at the mo :( Your timing couldn't have been more perfect :D

We need to get running really as soon as to iron out any other niggles before the big run down from Norfolk to Glastonbury next month ...

£63 for all the main bits from my local exhaust wholesalers - for anybody in East Anglia interested, you might want to try Exhausts Unlimited.

Just the reducer to the Commer downpipe o/s but I have a plan ...

Let the fun begin ;)

Cheers again Panky

I got the rubber hanger from Halfords for £1.99 and made up a bracket from stud bar and a piece of 1" X 1/4" flat. I've yet to fit the tailpipe support but again that was a couple of pounds from Halfords, have fun - it will be interesting to see how it performs on a standard engine :p:D

'Harvey the RV'

Yep, I forgot to say I'd found those hangers in Halfords too - almost identical to the originals on our Commer (sans the iron oxide)
They were a last resort and to be honest I was totally amazed they had something so seemingly obsure :) Probably half the price on t'internet somewhere though.

A big assumption that this will all work but on the face of it looks so similar to the RC40 there shouldn't be a problem - it's got to be better than the standard setup !

Forgive my ignorance, but is there any reason why a manufacturer would have devised such a restricted exhaust, or was just that no thought was given to such matters?

'It's not a proper slider'

combination of a bit of ignorance and trying to make it really quiet for happy campers/policemen :) and in its day traffic was moving at a much slower pace so nobody noticed the lack of power :D

Hi All....I see you have been very busy while we have been away Panky, looks a very tidy job to me, well done! So wish I could weld etc.

Didn't someone say they were going to start putting together 'off the shelf RC40's' for mere mortals like myself[?]

(We will update smurfs adventures with pics of our hols maybe 2moz)
