Back of the garage

Hi Jimmy, busy re-building the engine - everything looking good[^] Got all the bits to put it back together and drop it in but then need to sort out the linkage and mountings for the O/D box, build a suitable exhaust, SU carb to fit, electric fan to mount, worn kingpin to replace, crusty jacking point to renew, doorsteps - front valence and front engine cover to repair, fit doors and generally tidy up body/respray. So all in all a couple of busy weekends ahead :I but I'm looking forward to it - sorting out the peak has really given me confidence [^]

Been doing bits and bobs, like preparing Rapier engine to drop in :I and a few repairs to the floor before the engine bay gets full again. Apologies in advance for the total mess I work in [xx(]

Started by swapping the engine front plates over so the Commer engine mounts can be used, new rubber mounts fitted since this was taken:I

Had to cut about half an inch off the lip on the Commer front plate to enable the Rapier water pump to be retained

Need to use the Commer sump, the Rapier one will foul the cross member. Top pic is Commer

The baffle plate in the sump had cracked but a couple of tacks with the MIG sorted it out.

Spent half an hour cleaning the road gunk from around cross member

And tarted up the side of the engine bay

Next turned my attention to the grotty bit of floor - awkward little bit that forms the corner adjoining the front engine bay cover[V]

Chopped and welded for a while.

Finished the repair off by taking a pattern of the top flange from the other side of the floor and reversing it.

Slosh the primer

The floor is looking a bit like a patchwork quilt - what with all the other repairs I've done over the years, but now at least it's solid again. Still need to repair the engine bay front cover - the bottom inch is iron oxide lace [xx(] but that should be pretty easy - then it's time to drop the engine back in :p
While I was mooching about I notice a fair bit of play in the intermediate steering relay lever bushes, another job - it never ends [V]

know what you mean about quilting, looks like yours going to stay put;)

Charlie said he enjoyed hearing from you - they're hopefully connected to WWW now and ready to join in the CVF fun so will be able to follow your thread with interest[8)]

I enjoyed speaking to Charlie he seems quite a character - should fit in well around here :)

Job for today - sort out the front engine bay cover.

I said the bottom inch was rotten - that was a tad optimistic[V]

My hacksaw has a habit of slipping :I

Macker1 lent me a roller step joddler so I had a go.

A bit neat for me that:I

Same routine as the peak, self tappers to hold it together then weld through the holes.

Even I can see the improvement

The rot was caused by the vinyl covers getting wet and staying wet while poor old Harvey was exposed to the elements. A horrid soggy poultice doing its worst [xx(]
All in all a very satisfying afternoons work[^]

Through the floor?
Have you managed to get to the cab to check out the seats, you mentioned ages ago that you might be prepared to part with them

No backwards through the door [:0]
The size of the droppings were scary to say the least [V]
Earlier on Trimming the hedges back,I noticed some foam chewed behind seat, when I am brave enough to go back in I will see if it's the seat or some foam I was storing in her [V]
my neighbours keep leaving there bins overflowing [:(!]

I've got a bit of a rodent problem[V] I was using an air line to blow away debris from around the engine bay when a rather bemused looking mouse appeared from somewhere. Trying to avoid my attempts to 'blow it away' with the air gun it disappeared behind the dash[V] - gawd knows what it's chewing[xx(]

I put my cat in no.1 for about 10 mins to familiarise him ;)he's back out there every day for a bit longer till he gets it [^]He will, if not Lady's turn if that fails I will send George in as a last resort...cats called fender :D[}:)]:D

lookin excellent Panky, them joddlin' tools don't half look good[8D] interesting to know that engine bay covers trap moisture, Glyn suggested some for Bessie (said it was to help deaden engine noise but think he doesn't have faith in my patchwork abilities;))

Will also be on mouse eviction duties shortly, Bessie seems to have helped mousekind to survive the rigours of winter. It always amazes me how much havoc something that small can cause, must be reincarnated students:)

Harvey had been all damp and cold for such a long time out there nothing had a chance to dry out[V] - I think the heat from the engine would probably keep everthing aired normally.

'Harvey the RV'

true, bet your looking forward to getting your engine on airing duties.

There's something lovely & friendly about engine warmth in a commer camper- always love it when freshly parked up on a chilly evening [^]- funny what you miss.[8)] ho-hum - we gotta get these campers finished[8)]

Where once a poorly Commer heart lay now lurks the pump from something named after a sharp pointy thing [8D]

Will need to alter the filler spout on the rocker cover - it's too near the bulkhead, too long and will foul the engine cover. I wanted to use the Commer clutch cos it's bigger (and the one off Harvey's old engine was virtually new) so swapped the flywheels over and bolted it all up no problem - except managed to trap my hand between the flywheel and the trolley jack that was supporting it...ouch [xx(] Got a problem with the release bearing though, the Rapier one is smaller than the Commer version so not interchangeable in the bearing carrier, the Rapier bearing has a smaller hole in the middle and the surface area in contact with the diaphragm would only be small and I suspect it would wear our rather quickly if I used one. Has any one else overcome this problem - I was thinking about a cut and shut on the Rapier bearing carrier but if I get it wrong I'm stuffed without a spare[V].
All advise gratefully accepted :I
