Thanks woolfy but I'm a bit restricted for space. I need to get the old lump out first and clean up the engine bay, then I'll take the head off the Rapier unit just to check all is OK - the guy I bought it off assured me it was fine but best be sure I think.

looks good now the stitches have been taken out, am sure with a little make up we'll never see the scar - has the op left Harvey with any major personality changes:D[?]

Excellent stuff. Looks like your welding alternate screw hole method has avoided distorting the metal. I trust that any fear and trepidation you may have experienced when you first started exploring that little hole have been overcome with this successful pioneering metallic lobotomy. This should prove an excellent reference for others. I intend using some of your techniques on some bonnet surgery I have planned. :)

Too late - I've done the lobotomy [:0] But I have a few full bottles around the place:p

Hi Kes the food parcel would have been nice but I survived, I was fed and liberally watered in a nice hotel in Porthcawl - on the company of course[:eek:)] There were a couple of hardy souls surfing in the bay [:0]

There's been good surf here too - had one dip so far but been slaving over a hot(not stolen) apple mac recently;)

Nice hotel sounds like a perfectly sensible survival technique to me, Ray Mears would have been proud:).... wonder if he's any good at welding[?][8)]

As a change from pioneering brain surgery I decided to start the heart transplant and remove poor old Harvey's overheating engine. The back of the garage is big enough to walk down both side of the van but a conventional engine hoist just wont fit - but since when have I been conventional [}:)] A bit of measuring and a bit of shunting around gave enough room on the passenger side to drop the engine - all I needed now was a way to get it out. Luckily where I work is a rack that the contract scaffolders use to store their gear so I borrowed some :)

I cut this bit of chain to fit the Mini engine when I put it back in, worked a treat here as well held in place under two head bolts[^

I had to shorten the chain to give a bit more lift - space was tight.



And finally on the floor



Looks a bit grotty in there but in fact it is road dirt and a little surface rust, should clean up a treat

looking good there Panky. What is that winch thing? Looks like a neat solution. I presume it winds the chain around itself? I have a block and tackle thing which I presume would do the job when I get round to removing Jessica's engine.

Are you doing the engine swap then? I'd be interested in knowing what needs to be swapped over. Front plate, sump? obviously the exhaust and inlet manifolds need to be sorted (but you have those in hand I belive!)

Will harvey get to move to the front of the garage soon?!

It's a pull-lift. Very powerful but only a short travel, plenty for this job though. I struggled with getting enough lift even with this. Yep I'm going to put the Rapier engine in and full step by step details will be posted in glorious colour - I apologies in advance :I

just for the record how long did it take you to get the engine out from start to finish,and be honest please.oh and how many nuts and bolts did you have to undo.:p;)
 
I spent a couple of hours dropping the gearbox an exhaust a while ago, today I went out there at about 2 o' clock and had the engine on the floor at half past five. During that time I cleared all the stuff I'd left around when doing the peak, pumped up the tyres, made two trips to work to borrow the scaffold tubes and clamps, assembled the lifting beam and undid the last two bolts (the awkward ones) on the engine mounts, had one cup of tea, one cup of coffee and a chunky Kit Kat. I was working alone so realistically with two people and a bit of advanced planning with the right gear you could have one out in a couple of hours.
