Back of the garage

Put Bonnies battery on and woke her from a 5 month hibernation, she started first go after a bit of cranking to get the petrol through :)
But I noticed the ignition light didn't come on so changed the bulb and hey presto a red light - trouble was it stayed on dimly when she was running:(.
So dug the spare alternator out and checked it out - all seemed OK. What a PITA of a job to get the old one out, it's literally a ten minute job on a Minor but changing this one took me most of the day, I did need to swap the pulley and re-orientate the end plate to match the old one though. You need super long fingers and triple jointed arms to get to the bolts and I've got a severe case of Commer engine bay arm rash to prove it.
It actually went back in a lot easier than getting it out after a dose of wire brush and oil on the bolts. I was rewarded with the light going off completely when I started her up and now the indicators work as they should - no more having to rev the engine during the MOT to get them flashing:rolleyes:

Decided to have a go at overhauling Bonnies old alternator, at £12 for an overhaul kit it would be rude not to.

This is what you get for your £12, pretty good I thought. Bearings, slip ring, brushes rectifier, voltage reg and a metal link piece

It had been on the engine a long time

Cover off and it did look a bit grotty, bearings where rough as well

That wouldn't have helped

Most bits are just screwed on but the field winding need to be un-soldered to enable it to be removed

My little electric soldering iron wouldn't touch it so this bad boy came out of hibernation

Two wires on the slip ring also need a touch of the iron then, as I haven't got a bearing puller that fits, I used a punch to knock the front bearing off. Came off quite easily and the rear bracket and bearing also tapped off without too much bother.

Rear bearing knocked through after removing circlip

Then it was time to clean everything and start the reassembly.

Front bearing on and slip ring re-soldered

The rear bearing has a series of seals and spacers in the assembly

All in

Ir was at this point I snapped one of the three long bolts that hold everything together  and snapped an easyout in the hole trying to remove the broken end:( So another £12.50 later a new old stock bracket complete with bearing arrived this morning.

Field winding wires re-soldered onto the new rectifier and new brushes fitted

Voltage reg fitted and wiring connected

All back together and ready to generate plenty of lovely Lucas smoke:)

Everything except the bearings can be done without separating the casing, so not a difficult job if they are OK.

A new petrol filler elbow was all that was needed before Bonnie sailed through the MOT, no advisories:)
The usual tester (the boss) was on reception duty so a young(ish) chap stepped in. ''Never seen anything like this'' he said '' don't worry'' the boss replied ''the customer will show you what to do'' :D

I hope you didn't tell him that the handbrake does the front wheels until he had tried the rears.;)

Harvey's gearbox has been problematic for a while so I thought it was time to investigate.
1st little issue I found

The diaphragm was a little worse for wear too, I wondered what the rattling noise was but the clutch still worked - even though it was slipping like crazy, thought it was oil on the plate:rolleyes:
