Axle Ratios

How and/or where do I find out the Ratio of my rear axle? My dodge spacevan handbook states it could be either 4.777:1 (standard) or 5.125:1 (optional).

any help will be very appreciated.

PS i'll post photos of mi dogde asap.

Hi Mark I think the ratio is stamped onto the end casing but what ever it is, when you replace it, go for the lowest ratio you can find for more 'relaxed' cruising. This coupled with a K&N filter and an RC-40 exhaust will make quite a difference in performance and economy. There are a few people on here who have tried the filter and exhaust mods and had excellent results (you can actually climb hills).

The lower the ratio the better (within reason). Lower ratio = less turns of the prop for one turn of the axle. Some owners fit a Rover P5 axle (I'm doing the same :)) as it has a lower ratio than any Commer unit, is the same track and same stud pattern so Commer wheels go straight on ( so do Rover Rostyles :p) Trouble is you need to modify spring and shock absorber mountings.

I think I may be going a bit over-geared with my plans as I've got the P5 axle and also plan to fit an overdrive (I'd love 15" Rostyles as well) Luckily I'm also fitting a Rapier engine so hopefully there will be enough grunt to push the beast along at a reasonable rate of knots :I

Panky, could you give more details on K&N filter and an RC-40.
Like; what they are and who sales and fits them etc.

Cheers

Check this link out, Tim has posted the address for K&N. Most Mini specialist stock the RC40, make sure you get a twin box system. A bit of jiggery pokery is needed to fit one but it doesn't look to difficult (I've only ever fitted one to a Mini). Try using the search function at the top of the page, there has been loads of chat on the subject.
