I bought this ‘69 Highwayman off the original owner before he went into a nursing home.
It was always registered and still driven right till the day I bought it. Everything was original and unmodified. He left all the Tupperware and camping gear inside as well as many personal items. He’d taken this around Australia on many trips with wife and three kids during his 50 years of ownership. A real time capsule. I promised him I’d look after it and never turn it into a food truck.
I haven’t seen another Highwayman on the road in Australia. It gets crazy attention everywhere I go and recently stole the show at a VW festival. So much better than a kombi
I absolutely love this van and have done everything I can to keep it original and running beautifully. I’ve added a few removable modern conveniences like solar power, 200amh lithium battery, 12v fridge, rear and side cameras, vintage vinyl flooring and an induction cooker.
I’ve also rebuilt the brakes, diff, gearbox and carbie, fitted Rostyle wheels, resealed the roof and added a 6 speed overdrive for better highway cruising.
Love to hear your thoughts.
