When i go next in the new year i wll source a small factory to play, and perhaps start sending my vans (and other cars) over there to be restored. There are some very clever people over there.
 
Hi to my fellow "comnuts",

I have acquired the 4 commers that chromo found, they are on a block of land that is about to be cleared by a D8. I am pretty sure i have saved them for now.

From the verbal description, most of them are complete, except that they are geographically dispersed !!! :) meaning the blocks, heads, cranks, wheels, axles etc are no longer connected to the vans, but have moved away from the nest, to adjacent parts of the bloack...hehehehe..

I should have pictures soon and then i will head down with a trailer to collect the smaller bits, while i figure out where to put the bigger bits.

I already have 4 early commers in my front yard, 6 old mercs, 1 260z, and an old valiant in the back yard !!! Do you think this is normal ?

Hi,

This morning, i finally started the old van. Its dated 71 on the build plate. It did move around the street and the auto was working well. The main problem is the oil light is not going out. Its hard on when not running and slightly fluctating when running, but abou

did put new oil in it but i made no difference. I am hoping its the oil pressure sender rather than the main bearings. It sounds fine, no knocking or unnatural sounds.

That's a really wierd top, also looks like you have an air scoop to feed the supercharger :p Sits very well on the back springs though :)
 
It is so full of christmas spirit, i mean with red chairs and green carpet. Bit it will need the full complement of rain deers to get it going... maybe the top can become a sail... It is just so slow, no risk of speeding tickets.

I had a similar experience with the oil light on a car which had been laid up for a while. Although everything sounded ok, I had no oil pressure, so stopped it immediately. Checked the sender and it was ok, so feared the worst. However, it turned out that the new oil and movement had dislodged some crud from the sump which blocked the strainer on the oil pump. Fortunately no damage was done and a good clean of the strainer and sump fixed the problem.

Great to see it fired up & the roof popped, really lovely conversion.

Glyns' car has problem with oil sender - oil light was flickering - he changed oil but light stayed on, changed the sender but new one got some crud in which made the oil light flicker again, sounds very similar to your troubles. Hope yours proves something simple & easy to sort out - best of luck with lovely van:)

Hi All,

Spent more time on it today to find the oil ligh on problem:

- Removed the filter and cranked the motor, saw oil comming out the side of the block.

- Removed the rocker cover and again i can see fresh oil, BUT it was not squirting our of the hole on the rocker cover for 75% of the rockers. The other 25% of the rockers HAD an oil drop comming out.

- Measured the Oil Sender with a multi-meter, is basically grounding the light wire, hence its on.

- Even though i put new oil and filter, the oil seems VERY thick and black.

So next,
- Put some oil sludge cleaner in the engine and run for a while,
- change the oil pressure switch.

Remember this old girl has not run for a long time, but it starts really well, just a little juice in, choke out and bang... The pumper in the carby is dry. Its also got an unusual electric fuel pump, i hear it clicking when the ignition is on.
 
I would like to know, if i run it with the rocker cover off, should oil be sprayed all around the place ?

It was not, even when i reved it, but there is oil slowly trickling down to the valve ends.
 
I would think you should be showered in the stuff, sounds like you've got some blocked oil ways. It might be worth connecting up a pressure gauge just to reassure yourself that the oil pump is OK, cleaning the system out with fresh flushing oil is definitely the way to go - good luck and Happy New Year.

You will only get oil being splashed off the rockers, as they go up and down. Take out the small oil feed pipe that goes to the rockers, you have to lift the shaft to do it. The bottom end is located inside the side panel. Check it's not blocked, as this is fairly common problem ;)
 
Well good news today.... We have Oil pressure !!!

- Put lots of engine oil flush in, warmed it up and drainned it.
- Changed the oil switch with a new one. (this was the problem)
- Started it up and in seconds the oil light went out !!!
- Connected the temp gague up, and shows about 60c, i think the thermostat is missing, as the water in the radiator is flowing very fast.

Only those here would share the joy of this moment.

I then spent the next half an hour driving up and down the court i live in, with is about 100 meters long. It did perform better now that the tyres have air in them.

So next wil be the brakes, given there isnt any, the carby, the oil passage to the rockers, and last will be the rust work. (It will be a while...)
