Try typing ' lowering' into the search function at the top right of the page and see what happens ;)

A guy called des did one a year or so ago and there's a wicked picture of a super slammed blue van from Australia floating round somewhere.

I've got 2 in the workshop being done as we speak. One will be measured in Rizla papers from the floor and the other will be a bit more sensible. Pics coming soon....

Dez's posting is on here but the pictures have disapeared[V] Swampster bought his van and took it back to original - it was a bit too low for the speed humps :I
I think there was a string on Retro Rides as well.

definitely would improve look and handling dont want it slammed maybe some sort of adjustable system i know its going to be difficult cos of configuration but worth the effort..[8D]

My company restores old VW's and lowering them is one of my specialities!

The Commer is a different system to the VW but the general theories are the same. Lowering the back end of a Commer is a very similar principal to lowering the back of a VW Caddy and the front is very straightforward! I've been working on the hard bit which was sussing out exactly what needs to be done to what to give a drop of ? inches. I reckon I can now lower a van by the inch so you could say exactly how much you want to drop it.... I want to run my van for a couple of months first so I can iron out any niggles but after that you're in......

A deal sounds good!

I read an article ages ago quoting a BT engineer who preferred the Commer to the Bedford - because he could over-steer it on round-a-bouts more easily[:0]

I lost 3 inches of height just by changing the tyres!

As for the front, just cut a coil or 2 out. Up the rear its a case of removing a few leaf's from the spring pack.

I wouldn't go the route Des did (axle over spring - same as the caddy), whilst it was very cool, it was too low and he couldn't bring the front down to match the rear without massive reconfiguration of the whole subframe/suspension setup.

Oh, that blue one didn't have any suspension on it, looks like it was just sat on the floor with the wheels placed in for good measure, prob a spares wagon or summat...

Removing leaves is a very bad thing to do..... Your back end will become very sloppy which sort of defeats the object of lowering the van because it won't improve your handling... in fact it will be much worse.

If you flip the axle, agreed it is very low.....Perfect! ;)

But if you consider this too low the solution is to then move the rear leaf hangers downwards towards the floor. By doing this you totally slam out the van and then raise it to exactly the height you want. I'm trying to design a bracket which will have several different mounting points for the leaves so you can fine tune the rear height to suit.

Van looks good!

I think a few of the springs are only there as spacers and don't actually do much springing.

a better idea is to get rid of the leaf springs totally and replace with some adjustable coil overs and 5 link the axle :p stops the axle going walkabout [xx(]

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off no.3"

I was also under the impression a few of the leafs were there as spacers etc

Loving the adjustable spring hanger idea though, would certainly sort out the issue's Dez had with having to notch the chassis and hole the floor!

RUBBISH mine handled lol hi pankyquote:
