I asked amongst the impers who go to the event that is held at the same place, and the view is it's not really deep enough for canoeing. However apparently there is a lake nearby that would be suitable, if you're desperate :), and there is also a canal just to the south of Abergavenny.

I've been to that area to paddle the river wye before and will be going again soon so i probably won't bother this time. Having said that, it's a lovely part of the country so we might make a weeks holiday of it if we can afford it and stay on a bit longer so i might get my paddle wet at some point.
