In Scotland again, why are Commers so popular up there?

Still getting a crick in the neck:I

Woolfy's does look nicer, but theres also strong competition, at this price level, from Henry's finest:)

I think coach-builts are a personal choice too; maybe just not the shoppers out there at the moment, will be better at Easter :)

Commer coachbuilts are never going to be as sought after as the panel van conversions unless its something very special like Martin`s Hadrian, but it`s also about being sensible when you have agreed to accept a good genuine offer and then decide the grass seems greener on Ebay........and it then turns out not to be;)

Campers will always more desirable but coachbuilt's do seem far more practical (heart vs head). Actually I've acquired a soft spot for these CI Autohomes, in a retro 'futuristic' type of way ;)

Certainly more family friendly, loads of space to look after the little ones. Plenty of room to party in comfort for the grown ups as well[8D]

The CI Autohome is a fantastic conversion, certainly my favourite and so much more practical than a panel van but they never get the following or command the price`s that the van conversions do. I have owned several CI`s the best one is the Beige and White that is now owned by the members from Royston, sorry I forget names! I bought that with a genuine 12000 miles on the clock did some light restoration and had many a happy trip away in it but it will never be worth as much as a panel van conversion because its a coachbuilt. For what it`s worth the one we are talking about here is a Mk2 CI with a much bigger coachbuilt body which is totally unsuitable on a Commer chassis, body roll is a nightmare, performance is awful and the MK2 body leaks like a sieve around the front windows and roof seams, they never sold well on the Commer chassis as the body is so out of proportion with the cab and inboard wheels and of course the poor old Commer could not compete with the Transit`s and Bedford`s of the late 1970`s and of course today you can pick up a Mk2 Transit or Bedford CF with the CI body for a few hundred pounds....unlike a Commer:D

its something i considered with the Dog, i doubt it will ever be worth the resto cost but I think that if you go into a resto to make money you are plain stupid - I prefer the extra space and width of the autohome but that has to be weighed up against the fact that it is more cumbersome to drive around when you are not on the campsite so impromptu drives out are not so easy.

With the commer still being treated by some as the poor relation to the VW those doing the comparing dont have a comparable VW coachbuilt to compare it against.
the panel van conversions can compete with the VW whereas the coachbuilts are more comparable to the less sexy bedford / talbot etc etc campers.

I am happy with the Dog - its going to be / already is a cracker - however they are a different beast from their smaller relatives and as such appeal to different owners

The Dog is on its way....
