Andy's Workshop

As some of you will be aware, I have a small workshop in which I seem to spend more time doing other people's cars than my own. In fact, it's at least a couple of years since I had my own project in there. I also work with the landlord of said workshop on "things" he imports to sell - usually Mustangs of little metal that are sold on as projects after being patched up (not necessarily with metal. This is my new thread for all my ongoing projects, which at the moment are a TR6, Hmuber Sceptre Mk2 and of course my long abandoned Super Minx.

I will be, hopefully, emirgrating to Hungary in the next few months, at least by October (the "current" plan), so I have a lot to do in little time.

Firstly, Saturday was a momentus day. I finally finished the Sunbeam Alpine Series 1 that has been in the workshop for the last 2 years. We finally welded the front valance back on with the trust spot welder (after frist reassembling the four pieces that made it up following it's removal and many repairs), and also did some repairs to the water drain at the top of the wing (as directed by the client - I would have rebuilt it all), and it is now ready to depart the workshop.

It's been a long slog. We replaced one headlight ring with part of a wing off a series 5, note the indicator hole on the right hand side has been patched and the owner will need to make a suitable hole for the series 1 indicator. Both wings were patched, and one sill replaced, part of the underside floor replaced and both front rear lowers replaced. The main problem with the car is I first had to put right a lot of work previously done by another welder - who'd welded new patches over rust, and this had to be removed, before new metal put in. [:(!]

Also, at the moment, I have been building up the engine for the Humber Sceptre. It's now all nice and painted, while new core plugs fitted, pistons blast cleaned and reassembled and is now ready for the head.

Not on this photo, but put the front plate, timing gear and timing cover on as well yesterday.

It must be added this is not the original engine, but a new lower one we sourced - but is a 1600cc engine of a similar era out of an alpine. Unfortunately, the budget doesn't include for a lot of work on the engine - but I will be including the original with the car when sold. It needed a crank regrind, new pistons and a rebore.

Would love to see some pics of The Humber, could be interested

I'm getting round to taking some pictures! :) At the moment it is 2nd in the queue and I am only working on the engine while I wait for parts for the TR6 (missing throttle linkage).

But, to whet your appetite....

This is the car as advertised.

Highlighted in yellow are the new metal, and the replacement wing section. The valance also had new edges done with my shrinker/stretcher, as with the OS jeadlight ring.

My advice, if you ever get an Alpine, either get a well rebuilt one or import a rust free example from the US.

Hi Mike

That's a funny looking alpine! My advice is to get the best panels you can, and join the SAOC.

Humber engine starting to look nice. The alloy head has come out spotless from the blast cabinet, and found a engine laquer which sets it off nicely.

Well, now the sunbeam has gone, I have finally made a start with the super minx. I removed the cover sills today, and the result was not very encouraging.

Not sure I have the time to tackle this?

Sceptre will be worked on next week, made the inner front wings last week. By comparison to the minx, it's a piece of cake. I am now doubting that the Super Minx will get done this year. Might need to be parked up for a while until I have time to tackle it.

Cobblers! Spend all your spare time on it morning noon and night and you'll get it done.

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Meanwhile, back in the barn, work is progressing on the Humber

Still a bit of trimming to do on the front of the wing, as the it is meant for a superminx, and the early sceptres differed in this area, but should have this one done by the end of the week.

No, it's the original front panel. It's a bit crusty on the edges of the wheel arches, which is why it's been cut away, and one small area on the front panel that will need dealing with, all of about an inch.

Here's the cut about front corner where it now has the sceptre shape. Now all I have to do is attach the inner arch section and bridge the gap between it and the rest of the inner wheel arch. It's going to interesting due to the amount of flare on the arches.
