an idea for your opinions

hi guys:), i have been trying to come up with a few ideas to improve dolly's driving. things like central locking on the front doors, stiffened springs and all of the usual really. but 1 thing i think would make a massive improvement is POWER STEERING;). i have noticed that nobody seems to have done it before, probable because of how much work would be involved. as you know im thinking of trying to fit my 19td peugoat diesel engine which already has a power steering pump if it will fit in the engine bay lol, am i right in thinking that all i would need would be to find a power steering rack the right size, shape ect to fit along with the fluid tank[?] or would i also need to find a full set up from the steering wheel down? im pretty good with this sort of fabricating so if it can be done i will probably find a way but just wanted to get your thoughts as it may prove to be a very good idea for all of us.

yh i spotted them, but i was thinking more along the lines of trying to fit a steering rack from an existing newer vehicle like say, a power steered mazda van for example, then linking it to my existing power steering pump to power it. this option i think will work on commers with an engine upgrade but it may be possible to mount a pump from another vehicle onto a commer engine too. in thoery if i can find the right vehicle then it can be done and at a much better price than the above option you suggested. main problem i can see is finding a rack the right width and with the mountings in the right places ect. i noticed that the steering on a commer is very heavy so it may be a brilliant upgrade to save aching muscles lol
 
Alot of complicated work to achieve very little really. Commer steering is not that heavy (very light compared to a J2/J4). Electrically assisted would be easier. You would struggle to find a suitable rack and then getting it on right without creating problems with bump steer, ackerman angles etc.

yh all true i guess, still cant hurt to look into the idea AT SOME STAGE LOL just got my first bottle of fuel addative lol
 
I can remember reading on here ages ago I think fiat panda? steering box being discused but not 100% sure it was ages ago :I

I thought the steering was a bit on the heavy side when I started driving Babs about then I felt a bit ashamed that I was whimpering about something like that and so I manned up.

Actually what I did was put some more air in the front tyres and got the correct pressure.:) Genuinely made a world of difference. Although to be honest despite this quick mod I've still got arms like Garth...

bloody hell, maybe i need the power steering lol, the amount of fat on me, i would end up looking like the hulk with a beer belly lmao
 
I think someone mentioned the electric power steering off a Corsa could possibly be adapted, but as Tim says standard steering isn't that bad - it's lighter than the Mini:I

of coarse you could do the easiest conversion possible. steroids lol, could save on steering and breakdowns as could just push it. but be warned men may develop D cups and women can grow a thick beard lmao
