Am I mad for thinking about this?

That’s what I’m thinking but I’m worried about the rust in the picture I posted. Can that be fixed? What if it needs a new roof for the pop top to sit on? I’m so scared! I think I’m too poor for this project!

Yes it’s very North. I’ve got an inspection pencilled in at quite a large cost so praying it goes well and if it does I will need to find someone to transport it, if anyone has any recommendations that would be great, thank you.

Is it local to you? An inspection will hopefully put your mind at ease and hopefully give you an idea of what areas are really bad etc. if you can get pictures and stick them on here for people to see etc. This was my first post seeking advice which may help

Hi thank you, no it’s not local to me at all so I’m getting it inspected then will have to get it transported to my mechanic so won’t see it myself until then, which is very scary. I have had some advice on it through Panky so now it’s wait and see what the inspection says, I’m keeping everything crossed.

Very exciting. Yes fingers crossed. Transport wise I vaguely remember going on a website that you say what you need and companies then quote you. Hopefully you can get someone returning empty. At least you can pick a price you’re comfortable paying for van and walk away if they don’t accept. Good luck :)

I’ve just got an email they once again have another buyer! I’m so cross! This is the second time I’ve tried to get it inspected and before booking the inspection been told there is another buyer and they will let me know! Maybe I’m not supposed to have it after all!

Ahh gutted. I imagine they are fobbing you off for more local buyers. That may work in your favour if no one local wants it as you would definitely have the upper hand. It’s not like you have to buy it so you can plan what you want/need to do if they get back to you.

Honestly I’m so cross as this is twice in a week they have done this! Thankfully the inspection company are keeping the booking pencilled in on the off chance and I haven’t yet paid the £750 which is a lot of money if I can’t trust the seller to not sell it before it gets done. They also said if the sale doesn’t go through they will relist it so didn’t even say they will give me first refusal!

Yep move on, not meant to be. Go for one you can see and in the best condition you can afford, truth is when it comes to bodywork you can easily throw thousands also these vans and as much as I love em many can require regular maintenance and a bit of knowledge unless you have a good local oldskool mechanic.

I do have an oldskool mechanic and another one (not dealt with them before though) who deals in classic cars just round the corner so it wouldn’t have been an issue. I’m just annoyed at how this seller has messed me around. I’ve enquired about another van (not a commer) but they haven’t bothered getting back to me. I’ve noticed sellers aren’t always helpful when selling vehicles they don’t always tell you if it’s auto or manual in their ads and often don’t get back to you it’s getting very frustrating now but I will persist and find something even if it ends up not being a classic.

Something will come up. Certainly cheaper to get something in good condition rather than restoring something. Unless you can do a lot yourself etc etc

Annoying for you. Best think about what you want the van for, if it’s fairly regular camping trips away going quite far or more local stuff/car shows. Only my opinion and If it’s the former and you’d like a classic I’d probably recommend getting the next generation of vans that came along in the 70’s/80’s (transit, Sherpa, Bedford CA etc.) bit easier to drive, work on and more reliable. We take our Commer to France most years but it takes a bit of work/ tools and courage
