Another unusual one

Airborne is the conversion that Corgi used as the model of the Thames 400E van camper that they sold in the 1960`s.
The actual Airborne campers had an option of an ingenious camper roof that could be used as a boat!
I know of one Airbourne survivor on the Thames chassis, without the boat option, but I have never seen a Commer Airborne.
 
Crikey, you're right. All this time I had been thinking that my Corgi Thames had been a Calthorpe, but now you mention it I was wrong. Mine was pale blue and had cream colour louvres.

Been trying to find some imfo on the "Airborne" converters as they would have been pretty close to where i live, although i've only lived here 34years. So far i have drawn a blank. Going on the address I think they were either on the Airborne industrial estate at Leigh on sea or they named the industrial estate after the site.
There may have been a connection to Southend air port which is only a mile or two away but i haven't come across anyone who remembers them as of yet.Watch this space ;)

Being born and brought up in Basildon, I have an idea that they were in the Eastwood area. Not the only converters in the area, as Canterbury Conversions, who specialised in Transits were based in Basildon, behind SEM's (South Essex Motors)in Cherrydown. Are SEM's still there? They were a Ford dealership and renowned for their poor customer service!

SEM's gone from Cherrydown, now at Dunton by the Ford research centre.
I wasn't aware of Canterbury Conversions having been in Basildon even though i used to deliver paint and sundries to SEM,now known as Essex Ford,obviously a good bit before my time ;).
You are right Airborne close and ind estate is just along from Progress road,Eastwood but is Leigh-on-Sea postal area.
