Advice on Overdrive...

Hi all,

I am still having problems with the overdrive on my Highwayman. Problem manifests itself in the following way....

Start from cold, engages overdrive no problem, runs for an hour or so without issue. After this, if I disengage the overdrive, it rarely engages again, sometimes you can feel it switching on and off a couple of times and then nothing. Park up for 40 mins, start up again and it's okay for an hour then same symptoms.

I posted this query a while back and was advised to check gearbox oil level, this was fine.

The van stood for around three years prior to me buying it and one or two of the electrical switches had dry connections. This problem seems different...anyone had a similar problem and found out what was causing it? I don't think the cone clutch is slipping, doesn't feel like this. Could it be something electrical breaking down or the solenoid sticking?? I have no real experience of overdrives so would welcome and suggestions to get this working as it really drinks the fuel without it!

Cheers

Rans was doing this to start with then stopped working altogether!
after getting the circuit tester out & checking I noticed a male & female connection was not connected! so must have started off loose then came completely seperated hope it's something as simple :)

my hunter used to click out and not come back when the oil level was low.
you may have a badly adjusted plunger [:0]
next to the solenoid is a plate held by 3 bolts, under there is the plunger rod and operating arm. the hole in the arm should line up with the hole in the casing when the o/d is engaged (ignition on).
there is a nut for adjustment :)

This is a problem with the overdrive relay im pretty sure had the same problem with my fast back rapier not nice when you were in third lane giving it some then all of a sudden it would switch of!! :D

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Jon,
is the relay the switch near the top of the gearbox on the drivers side? One wire coming in from the dashboard switch and the other wire going to the solenoid?

If so I think this is available from Speedy Spares. Did you replace the switch yourself? Is it simply a case of unscrewing it and the new one in?

Many thanks

The switch on the top drivers side of the box, is the isolator, to stop you engaging overdrive in 1st 2nd and reverse.
I fitted the o/d on mine recently and the wires from the switch were only long enough to put the relay under the dash.

Not sure where the correct place for the solinoid is on a commer but i would pretty much garantee thats where your problem is there usually metal look a bit like a flasher relay but tubular follow the wires back from the box they will be between the box and the switch somewhere!:D

Thanks Jon and Martin.

I have checked and the solinoid is clunking away happily when the switch is turned on and off.

I have found what I "think" is the relay, it's a little black box with four spade connections on it, located just above the brake pedal (inside the little black box there are a set of points worked by what looks to be a small electromagnet), is this likely to be the relay?

The box has an electrical switch circuit printed on the side of it.

If you think I've found it let me know and I'll order up another from Speedy Spares.

Cheers

Yes that sounds like it. They have a generic Lucas number on, which seems to mean nothing. I have seen several different types with the same number [xx(]
Mine has 5 terminals, but that dosn't mean anything. This is the wiring diag from the handbook.
