I believe the strapping is aluminium; it, and the screws are completely painted over, but a few spots have flaked off and that's what my uneducated guess would be.

I'm glad I asked; someone who restores old cars came by and recommended brass.
 
Brass is very nice but I think it’s softer than stainless. If it’s all being painted over then why not ali screws. It’s not structural? So they won’t strip out etc.
 
This is the pitfall of not knowing anything about the whole process. Lots of different opinions and ideas on how things should be done.
I haven't pulled any of the original screws yet; they are completely painted over, and I'm waiting on the scaffolding yet.
Aluminium makes sense - as does anything that prevents further corrosion and leaks!
 
I'll have a better idea of what I need when I pull a few.
Which will be a chore since they are completely painted over to the point the head slots are too shallow for a screwdriver. Le sigh.

When I have this problem, (with slotted screws) I use a screwdriver with nice square edges on the blade and tap it sideways through the slot (as in not using it like a chisel). The paint usually all comes out in one go with a little practice.
 
I'm going to try some paint stripping gel, which will hopefully be easier to control.
This is likely going to be a major project, considering the number of screws involved.

If corrosion isn't an issue, can the screws be reused when cleaned?
