Advice for a wannabe Commer owner

Great site, been keeping an eye on "vehicles for sale" for a while now but finally in a position to start looking seriously.

My questions are as follow; Reliability, I'm not mechanically useless but nor am I an expert - what are Commers like to work on?

Secondly, I have around 2k to spend, am I realistic to hope for an MOT'd runner that doesn't need too much work (probably looking at a PB but not too clued up on models yet). Also do prices fall as we go into the winter months?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

hello welcome on board!

easy peasy to work on. The mechanicals are all simple oldschool stuff(4 cylinder pushrod engine - 4 speed box - live rear axle)

the engine bay is a little cramped but everything is doable. The gear linkage is a little fiddly but again not a problem. Rust is a bit of a problem but Woolfie (on here www.coventrycommerpanels.co.uk) is remanufacturing some key panels.
£2K is more than enough for an MOT'd runner (which may need some work!) - where not taking about VWs you know! Mots vans here are PBs, they have larger - more usable engines, there are also the DODGE badged vans to think about, some of which have an "updated" plastic grille.

the problem you may find is finding one, where abouts are you?

Hi Damon, Welcome to the forum, hope you find a good van soon:).

Compared to modern vehicles Commers are pretty simple to work on (did anyone else see the new citroen that you had to take back to dealer to change a light bulb[:0])

There are a couple of 'orrible jobs (sounds like king pins not much fun) but mostly doable depending on your knowledge. There is some great help on hand through the forum if you're stuck for advice on how to sort problems.

My knowledge not bad but not brilliant and I am mostly able to look after my vans' basic needs. Mechanical reliability seems good overall, there are some fuel starvation & braking quirks that crop up - as the monkeyman says the biggest problem they are prone to is the rust monster[V]

Thanks guys, I'm a bit more familiar with agricultural machinery and motocross bikes but ready for the challenge.

Not in a big rush to buy and happy to wait for the right van but the plan is to have something ready by spring so we can take our daughter (now 4 months old) on some adventures.
