adjusting the gear selection

Any tips on adjusting the gear lever / gearbox?

At the moment I can get all the gears but its more luck than judgement. It takes a lot of effort and multiple attempts to find neutral. Even getting the gear stick so it feels in neutral (i.e wobbles nicely left to right) it trys to pull away when I lift my foot off the clutch - it usually takes 5 or 6 goes to get neutral.

Probably best trying new bushes in the linkage 1st, that can make a huge difference. If that doesn't work, I have the setting tools, to re-align everything. I can lend you those.

I think Lee the bushes are cheap as chips and worth replacing anyway...but its a simple enough task....if you look at the linkage you will see what looks like a miniture track rod end...just un-nip the locking nut and twist the track end a couple of turns...then try it...you will soon get to know which way you need to adjust it....just a bit of a pain...adjust it, try it, adjust it, try it ...or wait til you get to MMs and borrow his special tool, which will probably only work if you have new bushes and assuming nothing is bent:D

I use a drill bit as a locating pin. Un do the mini track rod end from the gearbox and turn the gear selector till the locating pin fits in the hole that's just behind the selector. This is third/fourth. With the gear stick in third/forth position too. Adjust the mini track rod end so that it sits on the gear selector nice and square. Sloppy bushes won't help. The difference between 1st/2nd and reverse is about the same as between 12 and 2oclock on a clock face. So the tolerance isn't much.

That sounds very technical:I I just twiddle it one way or t'other until it works:)

How refreshing

the title of this thread sounds very much like what I try to solve, so here I go:

The gear selection in my '67 Wanderer seems a bit unprecise to be. Perhaps that is only my impression, not being used to drive vehicles of this age. But what I think is a bit more worrying is that I cannot change down from 3rd to 2nd unless I am moving very slowly (5mph or so). And to move to 1st gear I need to almost stand still. Between 3rd and 4th it is fine though.

I am about to order gearbushes from Martin, but I thought it would be clever to try to improve the gear selection as much as possible at the same time. At least making it slightly more precise by changing some worn parts. Below is a drawing of the gear linkage, and I have circled in red all the parts that I assume will wear easily. What do you think? Are these parts prone to heavy wear? Or are only the gearbushes responsible for pretty much all the gear selection precision?

many thanks!
Isaak

i think mine need setting as well, she drives fine but getting from 2nd to 3rd is a nightmare, i was under the impresion that on most 4 speed boxes you go left and up for first, then straight down to second, then into neutral and staight up to 3rd, down for 4th is that right?

Just a standard 'H' gate, sounds like your bushes are worn too:I

90% is probably in the bushes, especially the rear one. Also check the rear selector lever (19)is tight, as this works loose.

I think that Issak just needs to get used to the gearchange. When I owned the van, I didn't think it was that bad, and I already replaced the bush by the gearbox - but when we took the front bush holder off - I couldn't find the other one. It certainly needs replacing.

Not sure why the gearchange from 3rd to 2nd would be bad. I didn't have this problem with him, or maybe he is just being nasty?
