Adjusting Tappets

I hate adjusting tappets; it’s such a pain in the butt imprecise job that needs to be precise! [}:)]

On a regular sized car, I whip the plugs out and turn the crank with a spanner. If that’s not possible, I put it into 4th gear and push the car to move the rocker gear.

As far as I’m aware, there’s no way to turn the crank with a spanner on a Commer and moving 1.5 tonnes isn’t all that easy!

On a Commer adjustment should be done with the engine hot – how hot is hot and how long is hot hot??

So.... Which bright person out there can enlighten me of an easier way of going about adjustment?

Nope! If I did have one, it wouldn't help as I wouldn't be able to see the rockers move as I'd out at the front of the van!

I have a starter handle Helped Tim with this job on Sybhil [^] you need a friend an extra pair of hands....ere we go :I

I disconnect the ignition and turn it with the key ;)
I usually do a short run of about a mile, before setting them.

normal operating temp and an assistant with a starting handle and its a doddle :)

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

Hmmmmmm, I tried the key method with the plugs out and it span over too quick. Maybe I should try with the plugs in! Either that or find a starting handle and some friends that don't mind getting their hands dirty (both are hard to get hold of :( :I)

I HATE TAPPETS!

have been able to turn engine reasonably well with belt on pulley - but wouldn't fancy working through tappets like that.

Is it something a jack up the back end and moving back wheels in gear would help? - then would only need to find friend willing to get dirty crawling around moving wheels:D;)[xx(] [8)]

Check the starter solenoid - you may be in luck and find it is the type with a remote button on the bottom. Ive got a 'tuning kit' that consists on a few useful gadgets including a remote starting switch that clips onto the solenoid and you can flick away to you hearts content, they may be still available from reputable (or otherwise) stockists : )

Good idea, that would be possible If I jacked one rear wheel off the ground. My missus would be strong enough to turn it for me, just not sure if she'd have the patience to wait for me to go through the tappets! Shame most my mates local to me prefer football to cars, what's up with them?!! I might have to use the "no help - no camping" line :D
