Adjusting Dodge wing mirrors

Hi All,

The wing mirrors on the Dodge are bulky Wingard ones and currently removed as I couldn't fold them in to get the cover on!

I looked up the patent number marked on the body and they should be adjustable : https://worldwide.espacenet.com/pub...PODOC&locale=en_EP&CC=GB&NR=980585A&KC=A&ND=4

I've stripped them yesterday and cleaned/oiled but they are still incredibly hard to push down and adjust - has anyone had experience of sorting this on these? Currently soaking in a tin of oil to see if that helps.

Are they meant to be adjustable on the van or just prior to fitting?

If I can't make them better at least I've now found that the base splits in 2 so I can use half of it for the profile and attach something smarter to it.

Is it designed so that you have to push the arm down and then twist it and the spring keeps the “teeth” in the slots when released??
 
Hi there, I have these and they do adjust in and out, the finer adjustments for up and down and in and out are on the mirrors themselves.
The teeth at the bottom move up and down (that’s what the spring is for) as you rotate them to allow them to move and then lock in various positions so it’s likely the spring might be too compressed? - I guess you can adjust the spring but mine have a plastic cap over the mechanism so can’t check

I love these mirror arms and suit the plastic fronted vans well - very 70’s commercial and a lovely bit of over engineering

Sounds like they should be able to fold in on the van, on these the pressure required to get it far enough down to rotate would rip the door apart and they only just move far enough.

Mine were missing their covers and a lot of crap and rust has got in there. I'll see how the oil goes and maybe a de-rust treatment, beyond that they'll go in storage for a bit and I'll make a blanking plate to add onto the base and shove some chrome T2 ones on for now.
 
Sound stiff. Though tight on mine you don’t have to push down to move them, if you pull or push horizontally the up and down movement happens on its own. Have you tried silicone spray or can you adjust the pre tension?
 
Stiff is an understatement. Initially there was no movement at all either horizontally or vertically - they only freed up after several hours with thinners, 3-in-1 and a big hammer.
No chance of moving them with normal pressure - Something's seriously seized.
I don't think the spring can easily be removed, I think the mirror arm passes all the way through and is flared out at the bottom to hold it in place.

Look to do the trick! 6 cm mounting hole matches up to the Dodge ones.
 
Perfect. Maybe Martin M may have sound also . Word of caution those mirrors with the metal clip on the back are a bit crappy, they tend to move, can’t quite get the right angle and I’ve been through a few, they even crack the glass sometimes when moving the mirrors in as they’re a bit flexible. I ended up spending a bit more on genuine Brittax ones which are more solid and have a different bracket on the back, unfortunately I can’t get the direct link anymore but here’s my purchase history from eBay - btw the awning channel is also awesome :)

Got the arms a bit cheaper via eBay and a pair of cheap mirrors before I read the above - Oh well if I break them I know what to buy next!

The clamp on awning stuff looks good - was wondering how to do that potentially.
 
Sure they'll be fine, my drives so narrow I have to move one in each time which doesn't help :) Yer the awning rail is cool if a little expensive but it means you don't have to drill holes in the body and better than the plastic '8' rails you have to put on every time - they're a right faff. These are made for VW type 1 and 2's (like everything) so need a tiny bit of fettling by drilling new holes in the clips and grinding\filing off a small lip on the back to allow it to sit flush but all very simple and quick
