Whoo is the new crank sensor you fitted a cheap fuel parts branded one in a blue box? Get your self a brand new one but make sure it's oe quality. There are a lot of chepo sensors around and cause all sorts of trouble. Try and get a branded one like bosch or lucas. Have you checked the pins in the plug on the car to and it's no coincidence when your un plugging to check it?

It certainly came in a blue box. It says Intermotor on the box. The sensor itself has a plastic body, whereas the original has a metal body.

I did check all the pins and connectors, both at the plug and the ecu. There was no resistance recorded. I also used a piece of welding wire to check the connector, as I had read that the standard probe on a multimeter can spread the connector, resulting in a poor connection.

Bertie lives! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

Fitted a new crank sensor today and Bertie sparked into life. I switched him off and on again and he purred away - even went for a little drive round the green.

Loads of thanks go to Jon who has helped me through this. I now know the ignition system on this car like the back of my hand and I have a set of noid lights which I am sure will come in handy in the future.

It looks like Bertie will be able to celebrate his 20th birthday this year!

Well Bertie has been running perfectly for 5 months now and celebrated his 20th birthday. Last used him on Thursday, then went to move him today for a wash and he wouldn't start. Fitted a noid light and confirmed no electrical pulse at the injector. Could it be the camshaft sensor again? I tested the resistance, which appears ok. Could it be a relay this time?
Looks like I know what I will be doing tomorrow!

Went out to it this morning and it started first time and has been running fine since. I still suspect the crank sensor, so will probably replace it (again) and keep the existing as a spare.

The postscript:

The Jag is in Norfolk at the moment having some surgery on his rear end, so when I decided to take Mrs Renaultvation (Liz) on a cruise, it was decide that Bertie would take us to the airport. With long stay car park booked, the evening before we left, I took Bertie to fill him up with petrol. With tank full he decided to throw a wobbly and would not start. Two hours later we returned home on the back of a recovery truck and a text was sent to my son who was working until 1am to see if he could take us to the airport at 5am.

Holiday over, Bertie started and ran perfectly, but I am not happy to live with this potential unreliability - the search was on for a new crank sensor. After some trawling one appeared on ebay - original Fiat sensor in box, no model number, but Fiat part number was given. It was the right one, which is lucky as very few 1.6 Puntos were made.

Part was fitted, ran for 9 minutes and cut out. I refitted the aftermarket item and the engine ran again. I thought I had bought another duff sensor, but did not want to believe it. I checked the resistance on the sensor and it was fine, so decided to fit it, run it until it stopped, then check the resistance again. However, when I fitted it, it did not run at all. I then checked the pins on the connector and noticed that the Fiat pins looked a bit thinner than the aftermarket sensor, so I closed up the female connector on the car, fitted it and it has been running perfectly ever since! Was that little connector, requiring a 30 second fix the problem all along? :I

True test will be tomorrow when Bertie takes us to London.

As you will see from the date of the last post, Bertie has been running well. Let me correct that: Bertie was running well. Back in September I nipped out to get some cash from the cash machine and when I got back in Bertie, he refused to start. Walked home and retrieved him a couple of hours later and he ran fine. He continued to behave himself for a couple of months, but then became more intermittent. On a cold frosty morning he would start ok, but when it was warmer and the air was moist he would not start. He in now in the garage, but will not start.
I have checked the crank sensor (I also carry a spare) and fitted a new connector, but it is ok. I have also checked the wiring from the crank sensor to the ECU and all is ok and it is sending a pulse. I checked with the noid light and it confirmed no pulse at the injector. I also performed a spark test which gave an odd result. When I turn on the ignition, I get a single spark, but nothing when I crank the engine. I have checked the ignition circuit and everything seems ok. I then checked the injectors side and seem to have a leakage to earth, but cannot find anything. Sometimes the relay to the fuel pump works and sometimes not, but in either case it doesn't fire.
I have been on the Fiat forum, but nobody is familiar with the 1.6 engine which comes from an Alfa and has GM electrics and ECU and was only used in the early Cabrio and 90 ELX. Most Puntos have the 1.1 or 1.2 F.I.R.E. engine with Magneti Marelli electrics.
Can anyone suggest anything other than fire bombing (it has already been suggested elsewhere)?
