A strange front seat request...

I know there are bench seats that fold down into beds which is something I'll look into at some point but my ideal would be to have one that can also allow the back flip forwards to create a sofa facing into the back of the van to make much more useable space. I've worked out how it could happen including maybe a smaller steering wheel. Was wondering if anyone else has tried this idea or peoples thoughts...daft? Am i missing something obvious to stop it happening?

cheers

Not seen it done that way before, usually the front seats swivel around - but not seen that on a Commer either. I'd say go for it, maybe something along the lines of the old tram seats where the back is pivoted at a central point and can flip from one side to the other:) Or simply can lift out and can be fixed on the other side of the seat.

They're the two ways was thinking about. Was swaying to the lift out for ease of build and would make it simple to also attach it flat foe a double bed too

Westphalia put them in some of their splitscreen camper conversions. They are being reproduced but they are expensive. Google flip 'N' sit seat

I think the getting to check oil water would be a pain in th bum.

True Chris..had a look and a great mechanism though. My engineering skill will fall well short of that :) also i want it to do a double bed too. I'm sure its fairly easy starting with an original bench seat on runners that can flip forwards

Move the engine back a bit if you have a bench seat - I did :p

I am thinking of something similar but with a twist - the engine bay is the same height as the bench seat so that it becomes a giant bed; I am going to go for simple "wedges" of foam to make a back that can be moved for sleeping

Those flip n seats are flip'n expensive alright. But what a good use of space.

Does the middle seat in the pics below flip forward for engine access?

Correct - both of these are my van :)
The first picture you can see the panel removed for the battery and a nice safe blanket over the battery?
The middle part does come out but you have to still remove the back of the seat (you can clearly see how with the bracket at the bottom part of the last picture)
An easier solution is to move the engine into the back so you rarely need to access from the traditional bay :p

also note in the top picture you can see a "hook" like bit - that releases the seat to slide forward on the brackets

They are brilliant these but I need one to do the bed trick and also flip to create a van facing sofa...I guess unless the seat goes back along way also you'd need to take the steering wheel off each time, probably not that safe.
