Summer's Coming

This must be the one offered by a seller in Bridlington a year and a half ago. It failed to sell with a £3000 reserve (bidding reached £2499) but was later sold off Ebay. I spoke briefly to the seller a while later.

Mileage in the ad is the same as back in 2011, but it has certainly had work done to it since then. I seem to remember that the interior was original varnished veneer all over back then, so the new owner must have painted a large part of the interior white. Looks pretty nice, I'll have to admit. Even the new (I presume it's new) floor looks very good. Not too sure about the blue contrasting colour on the body, though...

All in all, it seems to be a good vehicle. Jackiepretty had a look at it back in 2011 and decided against it, as they thought there was a fair bit to do on it. But it was reported to start on the button. And, to be fair, being a 55000 miler from '64 it looks very good indeed, I must say. Don't know what is needed for new MOT, but it cannot be that much.

A rare chance to acquire an early Commer Highwayman with the extra bunk and a full size cooker (I have neither on mine, but wish I did). Somebody ought to grasp this opportunity to get hold of a nice and pretty original Bluebird Highwayman ! They aren't too plentiful, and definitely not in this sort of condition.

Get your finger on that "place bid" button ;)

Yes we looked at thgis van when in Bridlington and it looked awful. We have seen it since as the owner lives not far from us. We recently called to see him and he had at that time strted stripping out the interior, he has done a very fine job. The next time we called round he had re painted the van. We are going to see this van again today and you never know, we might put a bid in. Willreport back this evening.:)quote:

Oooh ! :p Exciting !

Look inside the rear cupboards (both sides, rear corners) and check for leaks/damaged plywood towards the top and along the walls. The floor in the same area should also indicate if there are leaks. Also, check the roof if it is even. I think a wonky roof (looking from front to rear, or opposite) could indicate structural weaknesses, and likely water ingress.

This is the sort of thing I mean:

This photo shows a badly rotten rear wall. The structure behind here is virtually gone.

Just wanted to mention it. I like the design of the coachbuilt section on the Highwayman, but they are prone to leaks - especially towards the back - and can be in a sorry state behind those innocent looking aluminium plates and fibreglass panels on the outside.

Hello fellow Commer fans. We too are very interested in this Commer. We gave our Highwayman to our son a couple of years ago and have been looking or another to fill the gap ever since. We can't get to see it and would have to buy unseen - we did this with our last two vans and weren't disappointed, but we realise its one hell of a risk to take. I was just wondering how you got on when you went to see it Jackiepretty? I tried to send you a message but kept getting an error message, hence me posting on this thread. I've spoken to the owner and although he has undoubtably done a lot of cosmetic work, he didn't seem to know a lot about the engine or chassis and was reluctant to send us more photos. Any help or advice would be welcome. Thank you.

I've just heard from the owner. The van is no longer for sale as someone got in and damaged the curtains and seats. Very sad for the owner and very sad for us too. :/

That is a shame. We , unfortunately, did not get there on Sunday as I had e-mailed the seller and got no reply - probably gremlins. But I can let you know jostein this chap has stripped the whole interior out as we saw the work he was carrying out at the beginning.:(quote:

That is terrible! [V]

Hopefully, the seats and curtains shouldn't be too much to put right again, and it going on sale again in a while. And good to hear that the owner has redone the interior right back to the structure.

But what are people like? I cannot understand where these vandals get their satisfaction from in doing something like this. It is a very disturbing phenomenon !

Yes, it's very sad. Thanks for the info Jackiepretty. It's back to the drawing board for us. Anyone got a highwayman for sale?
