"Thomas"

Hi thought is was about time to show "Thomas" bought of eBay near the end of last year,he has a sierra diesel 2.3 engine and box but standard diff.

so what do you think guys?

Looks pretty good [^] I'm fascinated by the gear stick, the linkages must have been a nightmare [:0]
I think you should re-name him Toenie :)

Thanks guys for the comments

The wing mirrors were on Thomas when we got him, they fold in nicely
the diesel engine is a bit of a pain to be honest it still has the standard diff so i lose all engine speed on inclines or hills it needs some thought over what to do next should i remove the engine and replace with a petrol sierra engine and gearbox or work on the diesel my other problem is the noise its very loud inside plus it only has a single silencer with a side exit exhaust, the gear stick..........its a nightmare at the moment you have to guess which gear you are in!!!

the conversion was not carried out by me this is how we bought him,got him cheap buy the seller wasn't honest,he claimed it would happily sit at 65/70 mph in truth it was lucky to see 50! on hills i would be down to 2nd gear and 10 mph it was a fun! drive home from mid wales to KENT

I needs suggestions please over what to do next do I fit the petrol engine and box or work on quietening down the noise and somehow match the diff..

regards

I have been told that whatever engine I choose it will have to have a carb instead of injection as it would be hard to wire in the ecu's
currently looking at a 1.8 cvh and box out of a sierra hopefully it will fit into the already modded engine bay that currently holds the diesel lump.

if you go for quietning it down then you still have the power problem
the 2.3 sierra lump is a noisey one, and under powered, so if you change to a taller diff it will get worse on hills unless you gain some torque to pull it :p. rover v8,8/16v vauxhall, ford zetec,v8 chevy diesel all fit the bill [^] carbs would be simpler ,but injection wiring is not complicated so long as you have all the bits.

Underpowered oh yes 35mph round the M25 nearly 7 hours home on a journey that would take 3 tops,
The diesel engines produces 67 bhp so by the time that power has been swallowed up by that diff no wonder its gut less
Have spoken to JEM engines who would supply me a 2.o ltr pinto engine that produces upto 180 bhp but me thinks this a little OTT and then there is the cost ........only £2500!!
I am still thinking about the 1.8 cvh but need to check on the power output but surely it cannot be as bad as what I have at the moment?

That's tough [V] really sorry you've got to sell. Someone will get an interesting vehicle, is there much work to do for the next MOT do you think?

'Harvey the RV'

I have to be honest the first time I looked underneath I was so surprised in just how clean it really was and looked so solid, the previous owner said it said through the 2 MOTs when he had it,really i just think it is bodywork that lets him down.

regards steve

did you sell this after? I only just noticed this topic. It wouldnt matter what you did with the 2.3 engine, they are slow as hell anyway, I have one still fitted to a sierra and it's dog slow in that. an easy solution would have been to fit a 2.5 LDV 400 turbo diesel, up till '96 they used the same peugeot engine that you have, but 2.5 litre and turbocharged. 90bhp and a lot more torque. it would go straight in.

No we decided to keep and start to restore him, would that LDV block mate to the sierra gearbox and what about the ecu and loom for the turbo[?]

steve[8D]

I have thouroughly researched this as I am considering a similar swap. Yes, it will mate to the ford box, it's the exact same engine block as the 2.3 just with a larger stroke and bore. there is no ECU its an old tech motor, was also fitted to '80s peugeot 505s,88-92 granadas and its all mechanical. I would fit an oil cooler for the turbo though.

mrspivvy: What are you converting from? We're getting a Commer with an original 1500 engine but would like to do a diesel conversion, preferably turbo diesel, this sounds perfect.
