1969 Commer PB For Sale

The van failed on front exhaust pipe loose (it was held on by friction and luck at the manifold end) and front brake inbalance. Speedys have lived up to their name and delivered a new front exhaust pipe and I will clean up the front brakes this weekend; so should have the van ready for MOT next week

Having brought the van all the way to Sheffield it looks like it will have to be sacrificed at the alter of House purchase.

I bought it last Oct and it has just had a respray and the side panels welded. The paint and welding are not perfect but we had intended to keep it rather than show it so I was after a looks okay from 3 paces finsh rather than mirror polish.

Driving up to Sheffield from Southampton we suffered from fuel starvation and came back on the back of a low loader but the engine now fires up so I put this down to a blockage and was intending to replace the fuel lines and eventually the fuel tank before the house purchase came up ( budget for £200). When going it was moving along at 60mph happily enough, although running hot I put this down to the system probally needing a good flush out as it has been stood in the Bodyshop since Oct.

It has the double bed in the back with the fold forward double bed in the cab (3 seater). I have a couple of VW hammocks to fashion into a hammock.

Overall it would be classed as a rolling restoration with attention needed to flushing out the cooling system, freeing up the petrol supply ( it has had a new carb fitted) and re-fitting some trim taken off when resrayed. The MOT has just run out but it is booked in on the 7th Sept for a new one and I can't forsee any problems, and of course it is tax free.

I don't really want to part with it as we haven't even spent a night in it yet and it is a really nice van to pootle around in but it looks like to get the mortgage we need to clear all the debts.

I will get some pictures up when I get home and I would welcome responses from people who are interested in buying it for round the £2500 mark.[V]

Okay, I feel I need to respond to martin's report, but for those who want to go direct to the report I have copied this below.

Martin came along and spent 20 mins prodding and poking around the van. The only feedback I got at the time was that the engine had a knocking at low revs. After asking if it could be body knock as it was a replacement engine from 2000 Martin said that no, definitely pistons, but all tappets were okay and the noise disappeared after the engine smoothed out with revs. The MOT found the exhaust to be loose at the manifold and flapping around on the engine - once I get the new exhaust clamped up I will let everyone know if the noise disappears at low revs, proving it to be the exhaust and not the engine.
It was only after the report came on the forum that I found out what Martin had said. Frankly I would like to think I was a lot more approachable so that if Martin thought the van was soo overpriced he would have had the decency to speak to me and let me know at the time. I am now left looking like I have deliberatley overpriced my van.

The fact is I bought it for £2000 last Oct, I have spent another £800 - £1000 welding, painting and new carb (I know the welding and painting were poor as I stated originally). I have never made money out of any vehicle so round the £2500 seemed like a reasonable price given that you don't see a lot for sale, they are going up in populatity and £2500 seemed a suitable starting point +/-.

The purple and pink one went for £1750, some have gone for more, some for less; there is no clear price that you can hang a hat on and as discussions have shown on this forum it is down to how much someone wants the van.

It has taken me a while to calm down since Martin's report, such was my frustation at not being spoken to. So as Martin now seems to set the price of vans on this forum mine will be put through an MOT and then put on Ebay with a starting price of £1500 and we will see where the market takes it.

So here's the report and you should see the van on ebay sometime next week:

I have been and seen Owen's van this morning and the following is my report, this is purely my own view and not intended to offend anyone, also I cannot guarantee I have not missed anything.
Front roof peak showing some signs of crumbling, n/s front inner and outer lower valances badly corroded. N/s and o/s fronf inner step cills missing or corroded, o/s floor panel holed. N/s and o/s fluted sills badly repaired, inner sills over both rear arches missing. Jacking points all seem good. Rear spring hangers both good. Rear valance badly repaired, rear lower corners appear good. Both front doors badly corroded at bottoms, n/s one corroded inside below 1/4 light. Rear doors appear ok from the outside. all gutters seem good, although some repairs have been carried out. The re-spray is very poor quality, with rust sprayed directly over, but no signs of deliberate attempts to cover rust up.
I did not drive the van, but started it up. At slow revs there is a loud knocking, this dissapears when the engine is revved, this could be a little end, but is only a guess. I checked the tappets and none were very loose.
Internally the cupboards and upholstry, are in reasonable condition.
Overall I feel the van is well overpriced and would not pay any more than £1500 max.
This is my own oppinion and you would have to make up your own mind.

Point noted Owen, I will take this into account if someone askes me to do them a favour in future :I

Will keep an eye on it. Unfortunately we live miles away (south coast) but as luck would have it my brother lives in Sheffield so might be able to check it out for us.

We know (now) that what we paid for Fontaine was over and beyond what we perhaps should have done - however, you see the van you want and you go for it. Yes, it would of been nice to save a few pennies and yes we do wish we had someone with us with more knowledge. However, we still would of brought her as she was the one for us!! It would be nice if she felt the same.....;):D[xx(]
