Well I'm piping it all up and I've only just realised there's no take off for the heater on the Holbay head. Anyone taken it from the thermostat housing? I'd need to get a take off made up but I'm sure I can that a bit of pipe.

There should be a plug where the tap usually goes, be a bugger to get out though. I made a complete new thermostat cover with positions for the lekky fan switch and a heater take off but to make it simple you could put a T piece in the top hose.

Ta, I'll give it a go. Should have some copper fittings that'll do it. Trying to get it to start now.

I've got 100psi compression on each cylinder, and the thing turns over so slowly I guess it'll never start. Did the 1725s have a more powerful starter than the 1500? I also realise now I got the dizzy drive in 180° out. I've swapped the leads around so they should be in the right order now.

I've got Martin's manifold on, nice piece of kit

regarding the take off for the heater...mine didn't even have the plug..hadn't been machined out of the head. Could see the cast mark where it would have been. Got it drilled and tapped at an engineers and then fitted an original Commer valve..strange Rootes parts bin stuff as the water valve has a gas pipe thread.

That's how mine is, but I can't be bothered taking the head off now, tempted to do it in situe.

I've tried a new starter, full battery with jump leads and it turns over so slow it'll never start. I'm going to have to try get it all set up and drag it down the road I think

you checked the earth straps, block to chassis...always one to make sure of for slow turnover, solved mine the other week but then again mine didn't have one at all

I had a similar experience a few years ago with a tractor. I took the starter to a "specialist" to have it mended and it was exactly the same, so I got a new battery and it made no difference. The cause was a crack in the windings where one field coil (the ones round the outside) was welded end to end with the other between the coils. Very difficult to spot, but thankfully easy to repair. I cleaned up the joint, folded a small piece of copper from a water pipe over the broken joint, and soft soldered it all solid.

I know it's a long shot, but it's just remotely possible that this could be your problem. If it is you'll need a BIG soldering iron!

Hmm, the problem I have is that the starter that is on it now turned the old 1500 over just fine. Now that was a tired old engine with little compression and this is a rebuilt Holbay. I was a bit naughty this evening and put 24v to the starter. Turned over nice and fast then. I think I'm going to make sure it's all set up nice and drag it down the road with the land rover this week sometime if I get chance. I have a feeling that once it's started it'll loosen up.

I'll have a really good luck at my spare starter on my lunch break this week.

Reet, rebuilding my engine for the 2nd time, this time with pistons to suit the bore. I've just weighted my conrods and they're all pretty close except for one at:

752.8
726
757.9
755.5

The pistons with rings and pins are:

661
658
651.3
650.5

Anybody have a conrod balancing jig?

It would be pretty easy to set one up if you already have the scales, doesn't need to be as fancy as this one
