There's an inline gas tap, a temperature knob, a red button and a white twisty knob. I'll take a photo later, it may mean something to somebody. And why are new 12v fridges so bloody expensive?

Turn the gas tap on, set the temperature knob to about half way, push and hold in the red button, then flick the white twisty knob clockwise between your fingers - this one is connected by a rod to a flint over the pilot light at the rear left of the fridge. When it lights hold the red button in for a while then release and make sure the pilot is still on. It that doesn't work (flint may have worn away)try using one of those long lighters while holding the red button in.

But don't forget to turn the gas off and turn it onto battery mode when driving, in fact all gas should be turned off when mobile, we can't afford to be losing any more vehicles to fire or explosion[xx(]

Thanks for that Panky, I'll give it a go next time I'm home. My new engine's arrived but l not at home to have s look at it. My girlfriend's sent me these pictures and I've been trying to work out what's on the pallet.

I can't see any manifolds so it looks like I'll have to use the ones already on my van. Looking forward to building the engine up now.

Unfortunately if your old motor has a cast head your manifolds wont fit that one on the pallet.
Hopefully they are on there somewhere. All looks like great fun, Good luck with it:)

Well that's a bit of a disappointment. Finally got home to have a look at what I've got. It seems I've got a 5 bearing 1725 block with +60 dished pistons and no camshaft, a 1600 block and a holbay cylinder head. Hmm, I wonder what Frankenstein would be the best...

No manifolds so I'm on the look out for some, I'd settle for standard alloy ones and I'd modify the inlet manifold with JB weld to make it match the smaller ports on the holbay head.

I'm also wondering if it's worth trying to find some flat top pistons, the holbay head and standard pistons would make for quite a low compression, wouldn't it?

I suppose I'm also on the lookout for a camshaft to get reground. I take it the cam from the 3 bearing 1600 won't fit my 1725? Tempting to go all out and build a big bore, chevy rodded holbay headed beast but I could do with not getting carried away with the budget. And I do want to run a single SU for economy so better not to go too wild...

No real updates other than that I've installed an electronic fuel pump and fuel regulator.

I'll get pictures up later but it's a fairly simple install.

I may have a few tricks up my sleeve though and all may come clear next week.

Reet, having a mare with this.

Martin is kindly making me a manifold and I've sourced a holbay engine. I've stripped the engine and have dropped it off with a machine shop to get the crank ground, block and head given a light skim and the bores honed. Got a phone call saying the bores are +8thou and will need a bore.

I cannot for the life of me find suitable flat top pistons for this engine. There's so much conflicting info out there on the web that I've just confused myself and have no idea what I need at all. Could anyone point me in the right direction? This is so much harder than building an engine for my mini lol.

Try these for the pistons

They do all sorts of stuff so you might get lucky. I think some of the early Hillman had flat top pistons but it's trying to find some:( Failing that try Speedy Spares of Brighton.

As for the fridge - turn the gas on and push the red button in, the twisty knob is connected to a flint by the pilot light and as you twist it sparks are produced. You need to 'flick' it between finger and thumb to get a good spark, once the pilot is alight keep the red button in for a while to re-set the flame failure trip. If the flint has gone you can always reach underneath with a gas wand type of lighter (it works on Harvey)

Thanks Panky, checked the fridge and img

didn't work so I'll get another sometime. I think I'd rather have a pure electric one if I can get one.

I'm at this stage now

Haven't found any pistons yet so I may run with stock and new rings for the minute, will burn a bit of oil but I'm not doing huge miles. Bothers me that it's not right though. Need a new clutch, mines down to the rivets and oil pump and I'm away.

Don't you just love oily bits:)
You can but the elements for the fridge to convert the it, there's usually a tube to put them in along side the tube above the pilot light buried in the insulation. I've done it a couple of times and they work really well, about £25 off ebay.

Thanks, but alas, no. They're STD size, I need any size other than to be good. Hunter 1500 pistons would do me too but I can only find STD ones of those too. I'm thinking I should just get it going then next year her a rebore and put some fancy rods and pistons in, maybe custom. Would give me value for money this year and next summer while I put some more cash to one size.

I also discovered the wires to the overdrive were cut which may explain why it didn't work

That'd be far too easy :) I'm after any plus size flat top piston. Silly hard to find at less than £100 per piston. As soon as I've sorted the sump out I'll get this thing built up. Thanks for all your help

Reet, well I went and put the holbay together anyway, it'll probably pass a little oil past the rings but not too bad hopefully.

She's in now, just need some manifolds and we'll see how she runs. Desperately need to get her running so I can store her for the winter.
