Other than the onvious capacity and power, does anyone know any fundamental differences between the two engines?

I am transplanting a 1700 into what was a 1500 PA and things like the size of the sump are getting in the way of other things.... like the steering!

I have a very sick 1725 engine you could rob bits from and is soon coming out my white van.
It has a big end gone. It runs nice and smoothly until the oil gets warm and then you need ear defenders.

I think the sumps are different. It's been ages since I had the bottom end apart, but as I recall, the 1725 in my Funwagon has a very different sump than the one in my 1725 Alpine.
