1500 engine - advice needed

bit of advice please - possible commer to look at:). no nothing about it at the moment except its a pa with 1500 engine[?].

i have looked through old threads and saw someone refer to 1500 engine as 'petrol assisted walk':(? will it be seriously underpowered? what about changing the engine - is that easily done and what to?

any help really appreciated

My mum had a Hillman Minx 1500 in the early seventies; even that was gutless. 1725 is the way to go if you want to be able to cruise at the heady speeds of 50-60 mph. Also, as it's a PA it's gonna be very old, so will the tin worm have struck?

might have been me? my first van was a 1500 PB and yes it was rather stately but I didn't have the option to change at the time and loved the van so
much that I just stuck with it and enjoyed it for what it was. Top speed was 55ish, but with great low gearbox it was o.k. up our Welsh hills, would pull up 1 in 4 and occasionally steeper. Had a race against a VW which pulled away slightly on the flat but I'd catch up again on the climbs - high octane stuff:D

I'm pretty sure (and will happily be corrected!) that it is a straight swap for a bigger engine.

I will read everyone else's posts before posting my own I promise I promise I promise !:I

I have a 1500 in the PA and it isn't all that bad; sure the diff ratios are different. It was still cruising at 50 without screaming, much as the 1725 without OD. It is however affected more by hills I think I got down to 15mph getting up the big one on the A303 on the way home!

I tried to swap for a 1725 from an alpine but alas the forum was a twinkle in my eye - we got it all married up with the gearbox and mounts etc no problem but the sump fouled on the steering which we tried to swap out but the oil pickup was in the same place.

Personally if its a PA and fairly solid and at a good price I would make the move and "put up with" lower performance for a year or more and then upgrade the engine and leapfrog the 1725 age or get someone (dozer who happens to be going into business 'updating' the running gear on commers) to do it.

thanks everyone for the advice. that was one of our thoughts to keep it for awhile (i want to be able to enjoy it) and at a later date change the engine. how easy would it be to pick up a 1725 engine? what sort of cost? would anything else go in? cheers
