Hi anyone know why there is a cloth under the steering wheel under the wires , I checked out some threads on here and someone was putting a new one back were the wires are , ,, they didnt say why they were putting a cloth there,, Why ?

Well I haven’t got any cloth there. Maybe he was lining that cubbyhole with cloth or the lining under dash that covers the front, headlamps etc.

Possibly the parcel tray covering, usually made from millboard but could have been covered in something else at some time.

No I mean were the instrument panel is , the cloth is directly behind that were the wires are , when I say cloth I mean like a bandana kind of cloth scrunched up , I thought someone put it there to stop the wires touching the metal frame , when my phone is charged enough I will put up a picture , if u look at my last comments you can see the thread were I ask the poster why it's there, I hsvnt had an answer from them yet.

Plus took out the van for a drive and I might be IMAGINING it but the take up speed when I change gear is slower everything feels lighter the pedal pressure , The van still revs high , it still does its 55mph but I think hope it's the clutch needs doing , , pressure gauge still reads about 45 on startup what will I need ,1500 petrol engine , I will add some pictures of the gearbox ect , I hope it's the clutch and not something more serious, the clutch can be done with the engine in I assume?

That just looks like an old forgotton rag left there.
If the clutch was on it's way out then it would be slipping especially in high gears.

55mph? You lucky bu**er lol. :)
Lol I may have exaggerated , I definitely get 50mph going down hill , weather here has been terrible so havent had a chance to have a good look at it , I hope it's nothing serious , I am hoping it's an electrical issue , spark plugs ,leads , timing , I just hope it's nothing internal . Well as the weather is so bad I pulled out the old Atari, jesus the games were sht, except for space invaders and pac man, I have the 2600 junior but the one I am playing plugs into the back of the TV, it's a RIP off ,

I was told many years ago that to check clutch when buying an old car was leave the handbrake on and try and pull away. Depending how keen it is to pull away and stalls etc it will give you an idea if clutch is worn. I may be wrong. Just don’t burn the clutch out getting too carried away lol.

Clutch master cylinder maximum line? My new clutch master cylinder doesnt have a maximum line on it , how full should it be? I have looked thru the threads but cant see an answer, thk u .
,,,,,It just seems to much of a coincidence that the distributor came loose from the engine block with these symptoms tightened it up kinda enough to drive the 2 minutes to my home ,its hard to tell how it drove in such a short distance but has the now the same symptoms since I have tightened it up , I am getting alot of acceleration but not really going at the speed of acceleration , , gear change seems fine , pedal could be a bit soft , I am not familiar with how hard it should be but it changes gear , about 20min before this happened I was in a back lane way trying to turn around in a hurry because truck was trying to get by and I was rushing to get into gear and as I took off I heard a bang of it jumping out of reverse , I thought sht but it drove
ok a good 20minutes before this happened . I really need a good old school mechanic to give it a look over

Not clued up enough to help with that. Hopefully someone will come along with some ideas Thanks soupdragon your like the my councillor lol moral support and an ear to bend , lol , what do u think of old wooden ice skates or ski,s as bumpers , I am playing with the idea as I cant seem to get rear original bumpers , also if the van wasnt as original as it is I was thinking of a wooden skateboard as the back step .

Well check the van over and I can find any problems , i dont know if i am imagining it but it seems quiter except for a little very faint noise like a piece of paper flutter in the wind , I will probaly regret writing this next bit as I am parked about a mile from my house ,it seems to drive well , anyway I am going to drive home now and see how it goes

The fluttering sounds like it could be a slight exhaust blow.
Thanks pankyyes I was thinking that myself , it definitely has one , I dont know maybe its running quiter since I righted up the distributor , I have gone over the outside of the engine and checked all bolts ect , basically checked everything , it just sounds quiter , it seems to be driving quiter but that could be just my imagination , I was stuck in school traffic on the test drive and was listening to any sound,, I think I need more nuts and bolts in a tin can to drowned out any noises
