It sound like something is be dragged along under neat it but there is nothing there ,like metal dragged along the ground, engine sounds fine but I stopped the van as so as the noise started ,, i think it's something to do with the clutch but i am no expert , it goes into gear then after a few second if u try to drive the noise starts ,, any help really appreciated , the van is about half a mile from were I live is there anyway by disconnecting something that i could get it home

Gutted. I haven’t got a clue but hopefully someone will come along with some advice.
Thanks Soupdragon, , I stead in it last night , just flew home for a cuppa tea and am on my way back up to it , I am going to have a Good look at it then , I am hoping it can be fixed were it is, anyway it's not the end of the world , I dont think it's the engine as it sounds ok when started , I think it's either drive shaft , cou lol d be anything , anyway its less than 5min from were I live I might freewheel it as far as I can , and pull into a housing estate and park it there till I figure out what's the problem , anyway have a good day

Can you get someone to slowly drive it while you have a look underneath in case you can see something obvious?

Yeah my nieghbour has offered to tow me back , I am kinda afraid to start it incase I do more damage , I am hoping that something has become loose and just needs retighting, anyway I am off up to it , talk to u later

Checked everything , cant find out the pro blem , engine sound good , van goes in and out of gear , been all over the internet and slot of people saying a stone could of got lodged in the brakes , is this possible on a 1960s braking system ?

Did you get it towed home? Did it still make the same noises? I wouldn’t have a clue about the stone but being drum brakes and depending on size of gap for something to get into the drum etc but I couldn’t make an educated guess about that.

No not yet I wanted to give it a look over in the hope that it's something I could sort out were it is , anyway I think the engine is Effed , I thought the noise was coming from the rear left side but I think it's the big end that's gone , I started it for a second and the noise is coming from the front of the engine so it started on the button but was noisy anyway i dont know what i am going to do next , 2hours sleep l A st night so i am going home for a couple of hours to have a sleep and decide then ,

I know I asked this ? Before but cant find it , best place for the recovery driver to attach the hoist thingy to pull van on to truck , if he can get it from behind that would be better but not sure there is enough room to his trick behind it ,so were is best place to attach it from front so as not to damage any parts,, I am tempted tempted to just drive it back as not much more damage I can do if it is bigend?

If it's a big end then you will hear a knock knock knock knock coming from low down in the engine. If it's from the front end it could be the alternator, water pump or one of the pulleys come loose. Have a good nosey around that area and, if you can, take the fan belt off and briefly run the engine. If the noise has gone then it's one of the things I've suggested, if not look elsewhere.

THANKS panky , I checked most of the parts u mentioned , but for a couple of days before this happened i was getting my ignition light come on and the van would cut out upon start up , normally it would start straight away it has the original not alternather cant remember what it's called but yeah it cut out which it would not normally do, I just dont understand it as the van was going like a racing car , I will take the belt of and try ur suggestions ,, plus there was not a knock knocking noise before it happened , as the noise happened I thought something got stuck under the van and was being dragged along , anyway it's another night up were its parked , I am trying to get a tow truck that just lifts the front wheels up and Carrys it that way ,
ONCE again thanks

If you get your neighbour to tow you home then you won’t have to worry too much about tow points unless you live up a hill etc.

is has some uphill bits plus speed ramps as big as Everest all the way into my estate , , I,ll have another look at it tomnorrow ,I got it pushed into a local school car park so should be fine as it's a wealthy area the area is not me , I will get it lifted tommorrow , and hopefully the problem is one of the things panky made, anyway thanks again it's always good to be able to talk to people who have encountered similar things , Really appreciate it , night all

HAVE being looking up my old posts trying to find this ? that was answered ,, best place for the recovery vichile man to attach the hitch to pull van onto the truck ? Also if I take the fan belt off and the noise stops , could I put it back on and drive it a 1/4 of a mile home , by letting it freewheel with engine off on the downhill bits and starting it up for the uphill bits ?

No don't drive with the belt off the engine will soon overheat. If the noise has gone then replace the belt and drive it home unless you find something seriously wrong like a seized dynamo or loose crank pulley.

This thread talks about towing points. It’s an old thread but Panky may remember :)
