Coil hot

Firstly, hope everyone is staying safe
Got my van running but coil gets really hot. I replaced the old one, so new one is just a off the shelf item from local parts store. Do I need a resistor before the coil? I’m more EFI, so these coils/points is a whole new world lol
What should I be testing? What voltages should I be getting where?? Help please
 
It's not normally a ballasted system so you should be getting 12v to the coil when running. Check that the coil you have bought is not for a 9v ballast system first, if it's not then probably a duff coil. New ones are notoriously bad unless you pay out for a Bosch or similar. If you can find a good old one that would be even better.
It's also a good idea to mount the coil on the inner wing so it's a bit further away from the heat of the engine, I guessing yours is mounted on the bracket on the top of the engine.

Thanks Panky, will test that out next time in shed. Nop, it’s mounted on rear wing. Someone has had a play with this van already. Found a old fuse panel in rear, plus a few other things that have been replaced. You can just tell someone has been on this before
 
Howdy Lowcommer, my Commer came with a ballast ignition modification. It lowers the voltage to the coil after the engine is started, to reduce wear on the points and the coil should not get too hot. You do need a proper ballast coil though.

Thanks dodgeram. Havnt had a chance to get back to it. Will let you know what I find. I’m thinking I have the wrong coil
 
I've got a good used Lucas sports coil here, I'm not needing it. Once all this corona crap is done I can get it to you for a few quid.
Edit.. just realised where you live lol.
