Can i just clamp a cone filter on this direct, or is there a special reason for attaching to a long tube ?

I would have thought it would be fine. It may need tweeking is more air may get in so may run leaner
 
Your oil filler cap says the rocker cover is vented to the atmosphere so no worries about being piped/vented to the air filter housing.

Yep it's been done. The only issue is the engine will be drawing hot air in straight off the exhaust, probably more efficient if you put a K&N element in the original air box and increased the size of the intake,

Thats what i figured. The stock setup has a torn hose, so i wasnt getting filtered air anyway.and somebody painted the inside of the metal filter housing with a paint that flakes off. Id like to do away with the stock setup, but heat is an issue. I'm currently redoing my whole cooling system, next is trying to do a better filter, and trying to keep more heat away from my carb.
 
I don't think there's enough room to replace the metal elbow that fits to the carb with anything else, I guess you could replace the torn hose with a silicon bend and pipe it away to somewhere a bit cooler.

you are right. Looks like i'll be hunting down some hose.
 
I have just fitted silocan hose to take filter to front of rad. http://www.autosiliconehoses.com/
See ‘fitting su carb’ thread. The large diameter bends are BIG. The bend i got was about 300mm long. I used 60mm ID pipe and I used 2in waste pipe bends as well. There wasn’t enough room to get pipe between body and rad so got a 45 deg s/steel pipe bend fot that bit. Large diam pipe doesn’t flex much, I thought it would hence all the bends. With the amount of pipe left over and all the 90 deg bends I had to get (that restricted it down to 50mm ID) maybe flex ducting would have been just as good for airflow. If a local shop sells duct off the shelf check that out first
