Tow bar fitting to chassis

Hello all,

Been thinking about fitting a tow-bar to my van. Might not be such a good idea really, what with the lethargic 1592 engine, but that's another thing for me to consider before I decide! Would be really useful to take the trailer to the tip (with a council license required though) and also good for collecting firewood for the wood burner.

No, my main question is, do all models of van have the same chassis set up at the rear? Mine is an early 1500FC van, 1960.
Watling Towbars list one for the PB vans. Is this the same as the early vans in the chassis department? I wouldn't want to buy it only to find that it doesn't fit.
Or I might just make one myself.

Cheers, Mick

G'day Mick. I have my towbar out of the van at the moment so if you want me to take plenty of pictures with measurements please let me know.

I fitted a BMW E36 detachable swan neck towbar to mine, surprisingly easy to do. Just narrow the bar and weld new plates on the end.

This could also be an option. I looked at some E36 pictures on t'internet. Looks to be a possibility. Did you have to put new holes and strengthening sleeves in the chassis rails, or pick up on existing holes?
Does the rear valance need cutting out? Would like to keep the van standard if possible.
Cheers, Mick

Yeah I drilled and sleeved the chassis. No body mods needed.

Hi All.
I'm currently having a new step & frame being fab'd up @ work with a detachable towball set up to fit my 75 PB highwayman.
Will post pics when done
