Dodge Spacevan survived in Sri Lanka

Dear Commer Fans,

My name is Dinesh (I am not writing my surname as it may be difficult to pronounce!) and I am from Sri Lanka.

I am not a collector and own few oldies and I was lucky to get a Dodge space van.
Here is my story.

Although I have seen older version of Commer Vans in my childhood I have never seen Dodge version till I saw the pic in an advertisement and when I contacted the seller who was an old gentleman and former automobile engineering lecturer I got the sad news that I was too late someone had got that.

Some time had passed and I went to purchase an old Double Cab and the owner had the beauty I missed - The Dodge Spacevan.

I requested from the person who had it did you purchase this recently from somewhere in Colombo and he answered yes. Then after long discussion he agreed to sell this Spacevan back to me.
I had purchased not only one double cabs but 2 from this generous person plus the spacevan!

After taking it to my home the very next day we had started on tinkering the body. I tried to restore the body as far as we can to original status. We have stripped all layers of coatings to the bear sheet body and utilized only 2K type primers and paints through out. This project has now taken almost an year and now it is painted jet black.

The engine was in good shape but had to fix the gearbox.
This did not had original hand-break parts and therefore we did add the hand-break to all 4 wheels!

The original running board was also not there and we had modified what we had with mechanically operated in-out running board and this would be motorized next.

However, I had decided to add new comforts like seats and air-conditioning as we are a tropical country and at later stage I want to add power steering also to this.

The new seating arrangement can now take 12 passengers excluding the driver (although originally this was 10 seater) and all seats are removed from a brand new latest Japanese - TOYOTA HIACE and only this type of spacevan can be fitted similar seating arrangement like wide bodied HIACE!

Now have to do matching interior work as I did not had any original interior except the dashboard and meter cluster.

I had fixed new Ampere Meter, Temperature Gauge and Fuel Gauge as they were not in working order and original SMITHS Odometer had just 80000km was intact.

Electrical system was a complete mess and we had completely redone it and all wires and sockets are now tagged so anybody can easily find the origin of faults.

Since original rear lights was missing we had added what we thought best and now rear indicator lamps have reverse lamps as well (I had also added in-dash indicator lamp of reverse to the meter-board as well)

After doing everything now I have to update ownership title and other things before drive on the road.
I will post pics later.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks Panky,
I think some of the tourists who visit our country will love a ride on this old beauty now having modern facilities inside.
I will let you know when its ready for the job!

Hi there Dinesh, we will all look forward to seeing the pictures. It's great to think that there are fine people like yourself around the world keeping the old vans going. :)

Add on..

Please note that the front signal lamp lenses I am having the original lamp covers but they are faded as there was no orange left.
What you see in the front view pic is the lamp cover we made here in Sri Lanka.

Dodge badge was missing as there was only Chrysler mark left and we will make dodge lettering made out of stainless steel too later and presently we have put up sticker lettering.

You can see how we modified the dash board. Front A/C unit is fixed appropriately and all A/C components are brand new.

You can see the original rubber beading are all worn out and needs replacement.

I have not added any electronics to this vehicle yet. ( I am a surge & lightning protection specialist consultant by profession and not a mechanical engineer and initially I want to build this as a mobile lab knowing BT and BBC had used Dodge Spacevan but this can be converted to any ... In that case people will see lightning mark and may call this "Lightning Catcher" - who knows )

The Spacevan is parked where it had undergone all the repairs - on the road in front of my house. (You may see that the roofing sheets also removed). Luckily I have an assistant who is an all rounder who can do mechanical, tinkering and paintwork jobs and additionally I had hired 2 persons to strip the paint to bear metal sheets and that had consumed 2 months alone.

There is another vehicle in my garage and engine is yet to fixed and therefore I cannot put the Spacevan inside therein.

Dear Readers,
I have another surprise for you all.
That is when my Spacevan was just 12 years old, it had locally made tires and this company and brand is no more since 1992! (and now it is owned by an Indian Company with their brand)

I have two numbers of those original old tires of more than 27 years!

There are still usable and I am keeping 1 as spare wheel.

Please see below for pics of KELANI brand tire made in Sri Lanka in original Commer/Dodge Spacevan rim.
You may note that at that time KELANI was partnered with AVLON TYRES ENGLAND - I wonder Avlon is still there?

Very nice Danesh I think you've got to be a true addict to notice that they aren't original rear lights. I think they look great. The dash though is epic

Dear Jimmy,
Thanks.
Yes once you are in you won't get get out - in that sense I am an addict.

I love your comments.

You will see in future this dash-board will have every thing directly printed rather than use of stickers.
As I said before all the wire sockets also had been nicely labled and colour coded and sometimes you may have not seen anything like that...

Best regards.

I love to see quality electrics/wiring it's something not many people appreciate or can be bothered to do.

Welcome Dinesh! :)

I'm loving that dashboard, looks very spaceship-like, haha :D
Thanks CommerVanDAN,
Yes I was a space enthusiast watching English Tele-drama - Blake's 7 in early eighties on our local TV channel.

Well this could be also converted as my mobile lab... then I do not know what you all will comment on.
