Overheating conundrum

So after changing all my hoses including the awkward little one at the water pump replacing the thermostat, flushing the system repairing the rad and adding fresh antifreeze the result was a fantastic disappointment. So I went out and purchased a digital cooking thermometer and took a manual reading of the water. It turns out that my gauge was out by 20 o/c.
Not wanting to have to replace my gauge (cus I like to keep old original as much as possible) a few meter readings and calculations later a 10 ohm resistor was added to the feed wire and hey presto jimmy now runs at 90 not 110 o/c. I did notice that whilst changing that little hose it had been kinked rather badly by who ever fit it and had not let water pass through it. I know this because it was blocked with lime scale dust, so extra can was taken not to do the same in re-fitment.

Looks like either the gauge or the sender has been changed at some time so there's a miss-match. I've got the same thing on Bonnie but the opposite on Harvey where 1/4 scale is HOT - must get round to swapoing the sensors over one day:rolleyes:

I forgot to mention panky that I had a sender off Martin which also made no difference. I think the gauge has been fitted/changed some time ago as I have a later square dash and 3 different types of gauge brands but that's what came with the van when I bought it so it would be a shame to throw anything like that away.

Well done sir - great analysis!
Thanks O.T.R.A. I must admit it's a massive buzz for me to keep old stuff going as long as it's perfectly safe of course. Needless to say 90% of my braking system is brand new and all the rest has had new seals fitted.
